Thornton Primary School was founded in 1930 in Birmingham, West Midlands. A school of larger-than-average size, Thornton Primary is proud of its diverse intake, with students from a wide range of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. There are around 150 pupils in each year group after Reception.

Headteacher

Sue Simmons.

Values and vision

Thornton Primary School works hard to ensure that its students have the necessary self-confidence and independence to properly progress in secondary education and beyond. Teachers focus on more than simply the academic aspects of schooling, however. The school also takes great pride in the cultural and social development of its children, with tolerance and understanding a major focus at all levels of the school.

Pupils are encouraged to remain active and inquisitive, so a great deal of learning takes place outside of the classroom and extra-curricular activities are encouraged.

Ofsted report

“Pupils behave well in lessons. They are respectful and courteous around the school during lesson times and when they move between classes. Their personal development is good... Parents and carers are very supportive and are very pleased with the way the school is now being led, governed and managed.”
