Job overview

Wembley Park, north London

Term-time Only.

Do you want to be part of a team that will help inner-city children to do the seemingly impossible?

Michaela Community School is an exciting new free school that opened in September 2014. A vibrant and energetic team, our intention is to transform the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In September 2017 we will have 480 pupils, years 7, 8, 9and 10. As we are growing every year (840 pupils at full capacity including a Sixth Form), there will be a lot of opportunities for development. You could play a part in leading and shaping the vision and future of our school.

We don’t offer lessons in ICT, DT, Citizenship or take children out of lessons for intervention. We aim to achieve 5 good GCSEs in English and Maths for 100% of our pupils. If you want to work in an environment where you will really make a difference, Michaela is for you.

Library

Our library is filled with hand-picked fiction and non-fiction texts. We operate a pupil librarian system where the children are actively involved in the day-to-day running of the library. As we grow, the library is becoming more and more central to our school: pupils love spending lunchtimes in the library, studying or reading. Our library is a silent space, and that silence is strictly adhered to.

Reading is absolutely central at Michaela

As Michaela’s Librarian, you would do so much more than run the library. Every child at Michaela reads for twenty minutes a day in form time, and you would be responsible for administering and improving the class reader programme. Every Friday, English teachers recommend novels to their classes: you would be responsible for collating these recommendations and ensuring they are delivered as well as possible by teachers. We have Family Lunch every day, and once a week we have a reading topic that you would craft and hone to ensure the pupils are discussing reading every week over lunch. Our weakest readers have thirty minutes of additional reading after school: you would manage that programme of class readers to ensure the pupils are having the very best experience they can of reading at Michaela.

But there is so much more to do. We are looking for someone who will lead on reading in our school, and who will bring new and exciting ideas about how to make our children love reading even more than they already do.

If you are the type of person who fits with our culture, you will really love working here. There is no other school like it in the country.

Michaela Community School is an exciting and successful free school that opened in September 2014 in Wembley, and is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. You may have heard of us: our Headmistress, Katharine Birbalsingh, is often in the news saying things that others find controversial but that we think are common sense. In 2023, our Progress 8 at GCSE was 2.37, the highest Progress 8 in the country. Nearly three quarters of our GCSE papers achieved a 7 to 9 grade. We also got 94% grade 5s in English and Maths. Our A level results were equally impressive with three quarters of our A-Level exams graded A* or A, and 75% of students went on to Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, Imperial and LSE.

The ambition of our vibrant and energetic team is to transform the lives of all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of us are Teach First Ambassadors. Some of us are not. All of us want to change the world by showing that a child’s home circumstances don’t have to be a barrier to exceptional success.
