Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a versatile and enthusiastic Librarian (term-time only) to work as part of our Library Services team from September 2022.  The successful candidate will have a passion for scholarship and academic research, a love of reading and literature, and a commitment to working with ambitious and engaged students to help them achieve their potential.

Library Services at Bury Grammar School comprises of three separate libraries with a combined stock of over 40,000 resources.  We are thrilled to be opening a new Primary Library in September 2022 – this brings together three previously separate libraries and will serve co-educational pupils from Kindergarten to Year 6.  The Senior Schools are served by two libraries: a Library in the Girls’ Senior School and a Learning Resource Centre in the Boys’ Senior School.  Additional Library facilities will also be provided for our Sixth Form students as part of the new ‘Court House’ development.  Each of the libraries is well stocked with traditional printed resources and an increasing range of digital services including audiobooks and e-books.  The library uses SharePoint to promote a growing collection of digital resources which includes popular journals and archive and database subscriptions such as JSTOR.  Our libraries are used extensively for study and research throughout the day and are a popular destination for pupils at break and lunchtimes.

The library is also host to regular lunchtime clubs and activities that support reading for pleasure, reading for knowledge, and general wellbeing.  Current events include the shadowing of the Yoto Carnegie Medal as well as a lively programme of activities to support our own ‘in house’ Book Award.  The School Librarians work closely with the English Faculty to nurture a love of reading throughout the school and seek to promote resources that reflect topical events throughout the year.

As a member of the Library Services team you will be responsible for the acquisition, organisation, dissemination and exploitation of resources appropriate to the learning needs of the full age and ability range within the School.

About Bury Grammar School

Bury Grammar School is situated in the heart of Bury, Lancashire and is widely recognised as one of the top independent schools in the North West of England. Currently there are over 1270 girls and boys on roll.

Our School is a family of independent, selective, day schools for girls and boys aged 3 to 18, which combine a strong tradition of academic excellence with the best in modern educational practice. The School has a long and rich history of excellence extending back 450 years and our staff, pupils and alumni are proud of the School’s long-standing traditions. Our modern, inclusive School community welcomes students and staff from different faiths and cultures. It is the blend of the School’s traditions along with our modern ethos that is a source of great enrichment for the whole community and is what makes the School so special.

Every one of our pupils benefits enormously from belonging both to a small school, where they are known and nurtured as an individual, while at the same time being part of our BGS family of Schools which is able to offer a huge variety of educational experiences and an excellent learning environment. Through our unique blend of single-sex education from ages 7-16 and co-education in our Pre-School, Infant School and Sixth Form, we offer the ‘best of both worlds’ for our pupils at every stage of their educational journey. Our vibrant and rigorous curriculum is designed to engage and challenge our pupils whilst fostering an intellectual curiosity, which translates into impressive academic performance.

The School is led by our Principal, Jo Anderson, who is supported by a strong and dynamic senior management team and dedicated Board of Governors. We are a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) and have been rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

One of our key strategic objectives is to maintain, recruit, nurture and develop first class teaching and support staff. You can be sure that as an employer we are focused on creating an outstanding workplace for all our staff so that we can attract, retain and engage talented individuals who have a desire to transform the lives of others.

A successful education is very much about team work and every member of staff at Bury Grammar School recognises that together we have the opportunity to change our pupils’ lives. Whether this is part of our fantastic catering team who provide our pupils with nutritious meals, our dedicated estates team who maintain our beautiful grounds or as a member of our inspiring teaching staff, everyone has an important part to play.
