Job overview

We have a great opportunity for a Library Assistant to join our friendly library team in January 2022.

We are a leading independent day school in Hammersmith with a large, open-plan library. Our students enjoy visiting the library for independent research, class visits and reading for pleasure.

Applications are invited for a fixed-term post, starting January 2022, until July 2022 or July 2023. The library assistant will assist in the day-to-day running of the library; staffing the desk (issuing, renewing and returning items on the library system), supervising students, helping with enquiries, processing stock and helping to develop book displays.

Originally developed as a graduate traineeship on an annual appointment, our current fixed-term vacancy may attract both experienced library workers and those wishing to gain library experience before undertaking a postgraduate course in Librarianship/Information Studies.

Hours are 10am – 6.15pm Monday to Friday (37.5 hours per week with a 45-minute unpaid lunch break) during term times, plus INSED days and occasional additional days in the school holidays. Some flexibility is required as you will be responsible for closing the library at 6pm.

Salary will be based on the FTE salary of £26,000 – £27,500 per annum (£20,616 – £21,800 actual per annum for term time staff), depending on experience. Actual salary for 21 weeks fixed term post is £12,000 – £12,700.

Fixed Term Appointment for 6 months = 21 weeks (including 3 INSED and 2 further days to be worked in the school holidays).

Additional Fixed Term Appointment for 12 months (September 2022 – July 2023) also available.

To apply, and to find out more about the school, the department and our attractive staff benefits package, please visit our website and view the section “Join our Team”.

Closing date: Monday 29 November 2021 at 9am. Interviews will be held the following week. Please state in your cover letter whether you wish to apply for a 6-month or 18-month post.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All posts are subject to an enhanced DBS check and receipt of two satisfactory references.

We are an equal opportunity employer; celebrating diversity and committed to creating a diverse and an inclusive environment for all employees.

Latymer Upper School is first and foremost a 'learning school', vibrant, global in perspective, innovative in its teaching and learning and combining the best of the traditional and the modern. A high value is placed on scholarship in both pupils and staff and the School prides itself on the excellence of its teaching and pastoral care, its academic achievements and its exciting and innovative curriculum.

Newcomers are often surprised by the size of the site on which Latymer Upper resides, little realising on first glimpse that the School stretches from the gothic gates on King Street in Hammersmith, to Latymer's Boat House on the banks of the River Thames.

Latymer Upper School’s ethos is as strong today as it was almost 400 years ago when The Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith came into being. Our story starts in 1624 when a prosperous lawyer, Edward Latymer, left part of his wealth for the clothing and education of “eight poore boyes” from Hammersmith.

Edward Latymer's vision was to offer his wards a life-changing education that would equip them to flourish in the wider world. This vision remains firmly at the heart of the School - although we now teach rather more than those original eight Hammersmith boys. The Latymer of today consists of a vibrant, co-educational student body of 1,200 girls and boys from all over West London and beyond, and a further 167 pupils at Latymer Prep.

Latymer Upper is a happy school, where the well-being of our pupils is central to all that we aim to achieve, both in and out of the classroom. Our priority is to ensure our students are equipped with the knowledge and strategies required to live healthy, safe and balanced lives. We believe that our school should help pupils become well-rounded young people, comfortable in themselves and in the company of others, whatever their differences. There are no typical Latymer Upper pupils, but we do encourage values such as politeness and helpfulness, and seek to instill a genuine sense of social responsibility.
