About the role
We are seeking to appoint a Library Assistant, commencing in August 2026, to support the effective running of our Secondary School Library. This is a local contract, and the employee will be part of the Support Staff. The Library Assistant plays a key support role in the day-to-day operations of our well-resourced Secondary School Library. The successful candidate will help foster a positive reading culture, support independent learning and ensure resources are accessible and engaging for the whole school community.
Responsibilities
Manage core library operations: issue, return and renew resources using the Library Management System and accurately catalogue and process new stock.
Provide essential student support: assist students, including English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners, in locating books and digital resources and supervise the study space.
Promote literacy: support initiatives and events, such as author visits and World Book Day and help create engaging displays that reflect diverse cultures and languages and promote the love of reading.
Provide staff and curriculum support: assist teachers in sourcing materials for lessons and research tasks that support our international curriculum (IB, IGCSE).
Manage textbook additions, deliveries and collections to students (this requires work during student holidays).
Requirements and desired qualities
Strong organisational and administrative skills, with competence in IT and library systems.
Good communication and interpersonal skills, with an interest in reading, literacy and education.
Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Personal qualities: approachable, patient, supportive, flexible and enthusiastic about promoting reading and learning.

From Nursery (age 3+) to Year 11 (age 16+) St. Julian’s broadly follows the National Curriculum for England. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) embraces the two years of Nursery and Reception, ages three to five. Thereafter students progress through the Key Stages of the curriculum.
The Secondary section strives to nurture in each student a sense of self-confidence and happiness; students are encouraged to speak up for themselves and relationships between teachers and students are very positive, engaging and stimulating. At the end of Key Stage 4, students take a series of public examinations (GCSE and IGCSEs).
After age 16, St. Julian’s prepares students for university by offering courses leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma. St. Julian’s consistently achieves strong results.
