Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an able and enthusiastic person to be part of the school community.

The library is located at the heart of the school and provides an environment for the acquisition of knowledge and quiet reflection. It is accessible to all and provides a pleasant environment both for silent study, quiet reading, research and group work.

The library contains 20,000 books and a good selection of periodicals. It comprises a silent study area, an area where pupils can work quietly and use Surface devices, a comfortable fiction area for pupils to relax and read for pleasure, and numerous sound-proofed spaces where pupils can engage in peer-teaching.

The library lunchtime supervisor will work with the head librarian and the assistant librarian to maintain an appropriate environment in the library and nearby workspaces.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Supervising pupils in Years 7 to 13 at lunchtime (noon to 2.00pm) for up to five lunchtimes a week in the library and nearby computer rooms
  • Promoting high standards of behaviour amongst pupils at all times
  • Taking responsibility for the safety, wellbeing and social interaction of pupils during lunchtime in line with school policies and procedures
  • Assisting pupils with a variety of tasks, such as printing and basic computer troubleshooting
  • Supporting the running of the pupil librarians’ work experience programme
  • Ensuring that all areas are left tidy for afternoon activities

This post will also involve occasional assistance with day-to-day basic library tasks such as book preparation, returns, re-shelving and displays and with counter and/or phone enquiries.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have excellent communication skills and the ability to interact comfortably with pupils and staff
  • Have confidence in their ability to uphold high standards of behaviour amongst pupils
  • Have the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Be dedicated, hard-working, self-motivated and proactive

We expect that candidates may well have an interest in literature, but this is not a requirement for this post and no formal librarianship qualifications are needed.

Terms and conditions

  • Immediate start
  • Initially offered as a one-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of extending on a permanent basis
  • This is a term-time position, working across 32.4 weeks per year. The post is offered on the basis of a minimum of 3 days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) up to 5 days per week (Monday to Friday)
  • The daily working hours will be 12.00pm to 2.00pm
  • 25 days’ annual holiday plus statutory English public holidays, pro rata
  • Contributory pension scheme, with 10% employer contributions
  • Discounted membership of the King’s Sports Club

Further details can be found at: www.kcs.org.uk

Closing date: 9am on Monday 2nd March 2020

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Values and vision

Our school was founded in 1829 by Royal Charter as the junior department of the university, King’s College London, and as such, intellectual aspiration and a progressive spirit are our heritage.

Today, we offer an education of the whole person, in Mind, Spirit and Heart, the enduring ethos of our foundation. Our guiding mission is to look outwards, to the world beyond school, and to life at 25: we look to the lives we are preparing our young people to lead, so that when the time comes, they are ready to forge the pathway they choose, and to make a purposeful impact.

We aim for each of our pupils to enjoy an exhilarating adventure of learning and to pursue academic excellence within a fun, caring, welcoming environment. Academic outcomes at A level, IB and GCSE consistently place King’s amongst the very top schools nationally and globally.  Supporting our pupils to grow strong in spirit, in the shared values and qualities of character that will ground them, is equally important.
