HIGHGATE SCHOOL

A culture of community and kindness

Highgate is a different kind of independent school. We are a School whose charitable ethos is an inextricable part of both staff and pupil DNA. Highgate doesn’t exist in a bubble, but is connected to, and part of, a community. We have partnerships with over 60 state Schools across 7 London boroughs, and, in 2017, Highgate co-founded the free sixth form school, The London Academy of Excellence Tottenham (LAET), with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club as business sponsors.

Award-winning success

Founded over 450 years ago in 1565 by Sir Roger Cholmeley, Highgate is one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent schools for pupils aged 3-18. There are currently in the region of 1,850 pupils split across our Pre-Preparatory School, Junior School and Senior School sites, in conjunction with approximately 550 teaching and support staff. We are proud to be able to claim some of the top academic results across the UK, as well as titles of Independent School of the Year 2019 and 2020, and Independent School of the Year for Social Mobility 2019. Pupils are also able to participate in over 77 co-curricular clubs as diverse as bee-keeping, medical society and robotics.

Working with us

The School is situated in one of the most attractive and sought-after areas of North London, only a short journey from Central London and adjacent to Hampstead Heath. The hilltop site in Highgate Village is the historic site of the Senior School. A few hundred yards along Hampstead Lane in Bishopswood Road lie the Junior and Pre-Preparatory Schools and the extensive playing fields, adjacent to the open spaces of Kenwood and Hampstead Heath. The Northern Line underground station is a short walk away and it is four miles to Central London.

Working at Highgate offers the opportunity to be part of a vibrant and welcoming community, committed to academic excellence and the highest standards of pastoral care for its pupils. The Governors consider the development of excellence in the education offered to the pupils to be the underlying purpose of activities undertaken by all staff.

Highgate is committed to the safeguarding and welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to this post, including checks with past employers, overseas police check if necessary and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

THE MALLINSON SPORTS CENTRE

Sport has traditionally held a significant place in the life of Highgate School, and the sports facilities are excellent. The School has extensive playing fields covering some 20 acres with squash, tennis and Eton Fives courts. The Mallinson Sports Centre consists of a large sports hall, a cricket hall, a 25m swimming pool, squash courts and a weights suite together with a social area, ancillary offices and changing accommodation. The Sports Centre services the needs of the extended school family and the local community as well as those of pupils.  During term time the Centre is used exclusively by the School between 8am and 6pm and outside these times and at weekends the community use programme is in place.

Highgate School recently opened its refurbished swimming pool in March 2020! the fully modernised interior now features on-brand tiling in blue, grey and green against freshly white-washed walls as well as a 3D logo. The ceiling is topped with multiple sleek sky lights and there are two digital screens positioned above the pool to display scores and news.

There are new changing rooms and showers, as well as bespoke viewing balconies for parents and pupils to watch matches.

About Highgate School

Established in 1565, Highgate is now one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent schools, with around 1,700 pupils aged 3-18.

Academic excellence

Academic standards at Highgate remain high, as our most recent exam results demonstrate. In 2023 over 50% of all our GCSE entries were graded 9, and 78.9% were 9 or 8. Within our Sixth Form, in 2023, 46.5% of all our exam entries were awarded an A* at A level (or Pre-U equivalent) and 82.8% were A* or A. In 2023, 30 pupils matriculated at either Cambridge or Oxford colleges, whilst others took up places at prestigious Art, Architecture and Medical schools. Every year, the vast majority of our leavers enter Russell Group universities or other elite Higher Education establishments, including in the US and Canada.

Beyond the classroom

Alongside their studies, Highgate pupils are offered a wide range of co-curricular activities which enhance both their childhood experience and their future aspirations. We are also exceptionally fortunate when it comes to sport with extensive facilities, excellent staff and a wide range of activities available.

At Highgate, we encourage social responsibility through our charity work, both locally and further afield. For example, we are the principal education sponsor for the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham and support Great Lakes High School in Uganda.

Location

Our School is situated in one of the most attractive and popular areas of North London, a short distance from central London and adjacent to Hampstead Heath. We endeavour to be a sustainable school and are well served by good public transport links.

Management

Our Head, Mr Adam Pettitt, leads our Senior School and is also responsible for the overall direction of our Pre-Preparatory and Junior Schools.
