Job overview

A secondment opportunity to lead on the LIT Programme.

We welcome applications from an experienced Key Stage 2 or 3 English teacher who has delivered highly effective literacy provision and who can lead Hackney’s successful Year 7 intervention programme.

The Hackney Learning Trust is a not-for-profit company which runs education services for the London Borough of Hackney. We are responsible for Hackney’s 27,000 pupils in over 70 schools, and its children’s centres, early years and adult education settings. Our vision is to provide an excellent education service so that every child, young person and adult learner can fulfil their potential.

The Hackney Learning Trust has a strong national reputation. As part of our work in developing literacy in secondary schools, we have developed the LIT Programme to help schools to improve their outcomes and deliver good or better educational provision. This is a bespoke intervention designed to improve thinking, Spoken English, grammar, reading and writing skills of struggling Year 7 pupils. The LIT Programme is a proven and respected approach to boost attainment at Key Stage 3.  It is currently used in over 200 secondary schools across the UK.

The Hackney Learning Trust is looking for a dynamic teacher to run the LIT Programme for a one year maternity cover.  You will have a passion for raising pupils’ achievement, a strong interest in literacy intervention and the skills to lead and deliver effective training workshops. This is an exciting role. It offers excellent training and leadership opportunities for a teacher who is ready to develop their career further. The role is available as a secondment provided the applicants have the approval of their Head Teacher.  You would join a well-established and high performing team.

The key strands of the role will be to:

  • Run engaging and appealing training sessions for clients who, as a result, will lead the LIT Programme in their schools.
  • Market the LIT Programme to potential new customers and to meet sales targets.
  • Communicate with confidence, passion and authority about the LIT Programme in a range of contexts including teachers’ network meetings, education conferences and workshops.
  • Support and coach LIT Programme hub schools selected to showcase good practice.

About Hackney Education

Hackney Education provides a range of services to support the education of children, young people and adults in our inner London borough. Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. Within our diverse borough we serve a wide range of children and young people. We have a particular focus on supporting less advantaged families: Hackney figures in the 10% most deprived boroughs in England on a number of measures.

Hackney Education’s key priority is to improve the life chances of every child, young person and learner: making Hackney the most forward looking education system in the UK, where schools, settings and partners provide an exciting environment which ensures inclusion and success for everyone. We see our borough as being one of the best places in the country for young people to grow, learn, develop and achieve – and one of the best places for colleagues to work and thrive in our education system.

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.

Hackney Council works to eradicate discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognise that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we will also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We also welcome those interested in flexible working. We particularly welcome applications from disabled people and people from a black and ethnic minority background as these groups are currently under represented in our workforce.
