About this Role

Contract: Permanent, Full Time

Salary: MPS/UPS plus TLR 1B

Site: Thomas Deacon Academy

Start Date: January 2022

Closing date: Monday 18 October 2021

Interview date: Thursday 21 October 2021

We are looking to appoint a dynamic, ambitious Literacy and Oracy Leader to join our middle leadership team to inspire and motivate our students and join us on our continuous journey towards excellence, improving outcomes for all learners and delivering the TDA core purpose:

“To ensure that each student acquires the necessary knowledge, skills and character to make a positive contribution to society and ‘thrive’ as a global citizen”

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will provide strategic leadership of literacy and oracy across TDA while formulating and implementing strategy across the key areas of responsibility, and across multiple Key Stages. You will be responsible for developing literacy and oracy as part of the TDA Principles of Effective Teaching and Principles of Effective Tutoring whilst working with Senior Leaders, Heads of Department and Heads of Year. The role will also involve line management of the Library and EAL teams.

The Academy has a great history of success and a bright and exciting future. If you are a current leader seeking a new challenge or looking for your first middle leadership role, and if you are an ambitious, dynamic teacher then please download our recruitment pack.

This is an excellent opportunity and comes at an exciting time for the Academy. From September 2021 we re-developed our curriculum offer and combined with an additional intake of Year 7 students over the past two years, this enabled us to create more opportunities across the Academy.

The Thomas Deacon Academy that we know today opened in 2007 as one of the UK’s first and largest academies. Whilst a building does not make a school, it is worth noting that Thomas Deacon Academy was designed by Norman Foster and Partners and in addition to our impressive main academy our beautiful 43-acre campus includes TDA Juniors - a modern, light, and purpose-built Key Stage 2 facility - and expansive playing fields and sporting facilities.

Moving forward, our vision for the academy is a simple one: we want every member of our learning community to be the very best that they can be and achieve their full potential.

The TDA way defines who we are as a community and how we learn together through our shared character values of curiosity, commitment, courage, compassion, confidence, and courtesy.

In September 2019, TDA received a very positive Ofsted report, judging the academy to be Good overall. Ofsted commented favourably, amongst other things, on the overall leadership of the academy, good teaching, positive relationships between staff and students and students’ behaviour. These aspects of the academy have been maintained alongside the identified areas for development being addressed.

Thomas Deacon Education Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The Academy will require the successful candidate to provide satisfactory references and undertake an Enhanced Check with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Visits to the Academy are  actively encouraged. Please contact Lucia Hawes, Operations Manager and Local HR Support on 01733 426060  or at LJH@tda.education to arrange this.

Thomas Deacon Academy

The Thomas Deacon Academy that we know today opened in 2007 as one of the UK’s first and largest academies. Whilst a building does not make a school, it is worth noting that Thomas Deacon Academy was designed by Norman Foster and Partners and in addition to our impressive main academy our beautiful 43-acre campus includes TDA Juniors - a modern, light and purpose-built Key Stage 2 facility - and expansive playing fields and sporting facilities.

TDA's core purpose is:

“To ensure that each student acquires the necessary knowledge, skills and character to make a positive contribution to society and ‘thrive’ as a global citizen”

TDA believes that young people should leave them as citizens that are fully equipped with the character and qualifications to take their place in the world. They place great emphasis on ensuring they experience a broad and balanced curriculum, with a wide range of extra-curricular activities, opportunities for them to develop their 'character' and a strong pastoral system to support them with life’s challenges.

In September 2018, a new extension to the existing main building led to new accommodation being created for a sixth form study centre, refectory expansion and staff professional learning centre.

TDA is part of the Thomas Deacon Education Trust which provides a great community and a network of support and expertise. Importantly, the Trust's vision is to give students the highest-quality of education possible and the best start in life.
