Job overview

More House School provides an exceptional, mainstream education for boys with Specific Learning Difficulties. Providing a transformative education recognised as ‘Outstanding’ in our March 2016 school Ofsted inspection, and in successive Ofsted inspections over more than a decade, we offer a specialised learning environment for 470 day and boarding boys from Year 4 to Year 13. Our pupils are taught to recognise their strengths and develop their self-belief so that they achieve independence and extraordinary results at GCSE, BTEC and A Level, above the national averages.

All boys who attend More House are individually timetabled, with many receiving support through the on-site Learning Development Centre. The very broad curriculum affords opportunity to discover their strengths, challenging them to fulfil their academic and extra-curricular potential. Judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in its last four school inspections, our most recent inspection (March 2016) graded More House School ‘Outstanding’ overall, and ‘Outstanding’ in each of the six sub-sections of the report. More House is CReSTeD approved, listed in their Specialist Schools category.

  About this post:

The role is based in the Learning Development Centre (LDC) which houses a large, supportive multidisciplinary team of 11 Speech and Language Therapists, 5 Occupational Therapists, and 8 literacy/numeracy tutors. We have recently introduced a sensory integration facility and actively encourage multidisciplinary working and communication between teachers and LDC Staff. More House is an inclusive environment and LDC Staff frequently have opportunities to attend school trips, enabling them to gain a holistic picture of the students and to get to know them better. There are also opportunities to attend residential trips; recent trips have included Ypres, the New Forest and a water sports centre in Wales.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and adaptable Literacy Tutor to join our department. Literacy tutors deliver literacy tuition to small groups of dyslexic boys in Years 4-13 within our Learning Development Centre (LDC). This post will have a particular focus on supporting students in Years 10-13 to develop good independent study skills, revision strategies and exam techniques.

Tuition will include any or all of the following:

Phonological processing, reading accuracy and fluency, reading comprehension, spelling, essay planning, grammatical structure, study skills and exam technique.

Outstanding day and boarding school for boy's aged 8-18 who struggle to thrive in a mainstream setting due to speech, language or communication issues.

Considered a national center of excellence, and the largest school of its kind in the UK.

Our aim is to help each boy who joins us, achieve, in the widest possible sense, more than he, or his parents, ever expected. This is accomplished by knowing a great deal about each student – his strengths as well as his difficulties. For his strengths, he must first be helped to identify them and, eventually, change them into a marketable form. His difficulties will not be static. We are mindful that we must be alert to changes caused by a student's own development, those of society and by the curriculum and make sure that each of our students is equipped to meet them.
