Job overview

Mathematics PGCE Apprenticeship

To start September 2026

We are pleased to offer a fantastic opportunity for aspiring educators to pursue training via the Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship pathway in collaboration with the University of Buckingham.

This programme enables you to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) while working at Royal Russell, receiving a salary throughout your training year.

As an apprentice, you will be employed as an unqualified teacher, gaining practical classroom experience from the beginning. The school's Skills and Growth Levy funds will fully cover the PGCE tuition fees.

Alongside your teaching responsibilities, you will engage in a structured training programme provided by the University of Buckingham, enhanced by our exceptional internal continuing professional development opportunities.

The apprenticeship typically lasts for one academic year. During this time, you will receive mentoring and support from experienced colleagues, ensuring you develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the classroom. By the end of the program, you will have achieved QTS and a PGCE.

Applicants should hold a UK undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and have GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above.

This pathway allows you to earn a salary while training, gain practical classroom experience from the start and complete your PGCE without paying tuition fees.

Further details about the program can be found on the University of Buckingham’s website: https://www.buckingham.ac.uk/courses/apprenticeship/postgraduate-teacher-apprenticeship-with-qts-and-pgce/

Thank you for your interest in joining the Royal Russell team

Royal Russell is an Independent Day and Boarding School for boys and girls aged 3 to 18.

Royal Russell is different by design and offers an exceptional education as a family school by valuing what makes each pupil distinctively brilliant. Pupils are supported to realise their vision of success in an open community that reflects the real world and celebrates all achievements.

Located just 8 mins from East Croydon station, pupils enjoy the 110-acre campus, which contains incredible facilities to inspire learning and personal growth; from cutting-edge science labs, extensive sporting facilities, Chapel, Great Hall, spacious dining areas, Performing Arts Centre and beautiful Houses surrounded by green open space.

The School offers bespoke educational pathways to support children and is guided by expert tutors, teachers, coaches and pastoral teams.

There are more than 300 pupils in the Junior School, and over 800 pupils in the Senior School including approximately 250 pupils in the Sixth Form. The School also has around 180 boarders staying in the boarding houses on campus.  Pupils benefit from learning in a co-educational setting and as part of an open community that reflects the real world, celebrating both individual and collective achievements.

Royal Russell was founded in 1853 as a charity to look after orphans of families from the textile trades and is proud to have enjoyed Royal Patronage from its foundation, and for having Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as the School’s Patron during her reign.
