Job description

United Learning is developing a coherent, ambitious, and aspirational curriculum to support a growing number of teachers across England. The purpose of the United Learning Curriculum is to improve the quality of teaching across schools, and to free up teachers’ planning time, allowing them to spend more of their time adapting resources for individual pupils and classes.

United Learning was recently chosen as a project partner for The Maths Excellence Fund and has been awarded £1.9 million to improve Maths outcomes for disadvantaged pupils with potential in Maths. As part of the five year programme, we are writing and resourcing an enriched curriculum for KS3, integrating level 2 Further Maths into our KS4 schemes of work, and increasing our support for KS5 teachers. As the Maths Excellence Developer, you will join our central team to develop the Mathematics curriculum for our most able pupils across KS3, KS4 and KS5.

You will:

  • Write and develop an enriched KS3 curriculum, sequenced to sit alongside and complement our current maths provision. This curriculum will go beyond the national curriculum to develop a love and interest of maths for its intrinsic beauty and structure.
  • Train and develop teachers in school to deliver the enriched curriculum through:
  • regular live CPD sessions where teachers can work together.
  • recorded CPD on the pedagogy and curriculum for each unit.
  • Work to refine the KS4 higher schemes of work and develop an extended KS4 curriculum that integrates level 2 Further Maths content for pupils with the potential to achieve 7+ at GCSE.
  • Develop supporting resources – including lesson slides, printable resources, quiz questions, key vocabulary, common misconceptions and how to address them, and other resources as appropriate – that teachers will use to deliver the enriched curriculum. These will reflect research-informed pedagogies such as Rosenshine Principles and ideas in Teach Like a Champion, and will be completed to termly deadlines.
  • Teach remote sessions for pupils in schools that do not have capacity to offer level 2 Further Maths.
  • Collaborate with our central team, including
  • other maths curriculum writers and the maths adviser team.
  • teachers in our schools.
  • artworker and intellectual property specialists, to ensure that all images and diagrams used in the curriculum resources have the appropriate licencing and permissions where required.
  • Develop and refine resources for teachers, such as subject knowledge videos, or guidance for teaching units or individual lessons. This will include A Level subject content. This will include visiting schools to see the new curriculum being taught and gathering feedback from teachers and pupils.
  • Spend time in schools participating in the programme, checking on the quality of the implementation of different elements.
  • Develop and create resources that will help parents to support their children on the school based programmes.
  • Work alongside the wider secondary curriculum team to – where appropriate – make meaningful links between subjects such as science and geography.
  • Work to both the Director of Secondary Mathematics, maths advisers and Director of Curriculum to ensure that the curriculum resources support high quality mathematics teaching and are consistent with United Learning’s overall approach to curriculum design.
  • Respond to feedback from teachers, the mathematics curriculum team, and the Director of Curriculum.
  • Any other reasonable support as required by the Director of Secondary Mathematics or Director of Curriculum in relation to the design of the curriculum.

This an exciting opportunity to work alongside our wider Mathematics team and other curriculum writers to help to shape our vision for the curriculum, and to develop resources that will have a very tangible and positive impact for teachers.

Contract

  • There is one full time position available.
  • This exciting role will offer you a large degree of flexibility and will be perfect for experienced teachers who are passionate about Mathematics but who may want to step away from the classroom.

The recruitment process

Stage 1: Online Application. The online application will require your education and employment history, and a personal statement that outlines your suitability for the role.

United Learning is a large, and growing, group of schools, across both primary and secondary phases, and the state and independent sectors. We aim to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our teachers are passionate about their work. We know that teaching can be a tough profession, but with the right support and a commitment to seeing the best in each other, we work tirelessly to find creative ways to educate. By working as a team, we can achieve more together by sharing than any single teacher, department or school could alone. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed.

To produce the best learning experiences for our pupils, we believe it’s essential to enhance the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) capabilities of both teachers and support staff, and our range of programmes, facilitated by the United Learning Institute support your to develop and progress within your career.

Our rewards and wellbeing programmes help us show we care about you. We're working with experts in the field to introduce a Group-wide wellbeing programme to support you every day, and every academy offers at least eight INSET days per academic year, with three solely dedicated to planning. Additionally, you can access a range of flexible benefits that suit your lifestyle, from reduced childcare costs and gym memberships, to cycle to work and health programmes, hundreds of retail discounts, and many more.

Teaching is a challenging – yet fantastic – profession. It takes a dedicated practitioner with a solid team of support staff behind them to make a real difference to a child’s life.

That’s why we believe so passionately in the power of sharing. When everyone is working together towards the same goal, we enrich life for every member of staff. Our pupils can expect an outstanding education from a committed team of practitioners that share one core value – to see children and young people achieve their full potential. It's an ethos we call the best in everyone’.

It’s a challenging brief, but one that we’re meeting with a skilled workforce who are supported every step of the way.
