Didcot Girls’ School & Didcot Sixth Form

Role commences 1st January 2022

Salary/allowances: MPS/UPS scale point.

Thank you for your interest in this exciting post. Application forms, other recruitment material and a copy of the school’s prospectus are available on the school website under the ‘Join Us’ tab.

Didcot Girls’ School is a dynamic school. In December 2015, the school was judged to be Outstanding. As Ofsted recognised, we invest in all of our staff: ‘Staff have exceptional opportunities for professional development. Staff feel valued and really like working in the school. Morale is very high.'(Ofsted).

We are a values-driven school, committed to high quality teaching and learning and respectful relationships within an inclusive learning community. Developing stimulating and student-centred teaching and learning is at the centre of our school development work. We work hard to ensure that all girls’ education enables our students to develop confidence, leadership skills and high levels of aspiration.

Summer 2019 GCSE results were superb with 83% of all students achieving 4+ in English and Maths, and 64% doing the same at 5+. Our Attainment 8 figure was significantly above national average at 54.3 and our provisional Progress 8 of +0.71 places us the top 3% of schools nationally. Results at A level in the mixed sixth form shared with our partner school, St Birinus School, are also extremely strong.

DGS Maths Department

The Maths Department is staffed by an enthusiastic and talented group of thirteen teaching staff, who are always keen to share ideas and resources. We are exceptionally collaborative and very well resourced, as a result of careful, strategic and iterative curriculum development over a number of years. We also have a highly skilled Core Teaching Assistant who is permanently based in the department and a highly skilled part-time Progress Mentor who delivers small group intervention sessions to students in Key Stage 3 and 4.

The department has a clear vision for Maths Mastery and our own Mastery Specialist through the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics, enabling us to be at the centre of both local and national developments in this key area.

The department is accommodated in specialist classrooms with projectors and visualisers. There is also a dedicated maths team room, which serves as both a very sociable staffroom and a well organised resource centre, where a wide variety of tasks and activities are kept.

From September 2019 Didcot Sixth Form will be based largely at St Birinus School with bespoke teaching facilities for our staff who will be teaching across site in the mixed sixth form.

Curriculum

We teach a mastery curriculum, to KS3 and 4. As well as a GCSE in Mathematics, one class each year completes an additional GCSE in Further Maths.

Maths is a very popular choice in the thriving Didcot Sixth Form and we offer both Maths and Further Maths.  We have 156 students enrolled on a maths course with 3 maths groups in each of Year 12 and Year 13.  Students are entered for Pearson A level maths at the end of Year 13.  Further Maths students are entered for A level maths at the end of Year 12 and then study Further Maths in Year 13.  They are also entered for Pearson A level and the optional units currently offered are Mechanics and Decision.

Outcomes

Our GCSE results have been consistently 20 to 30% above the national average. In 2021 76% of A Level entries achieved A*-B in Maths and 90% of entries achieved A*-B.  We are very proud of these successes and attribute them to inspirational leadership and teaching, a growth mindset and lots of hard work!

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our students regularly participate in Maths Challenges and we seek out appropriate and engaging trips including visits to Oxford University, ‘Why Further Maths’ and Maths Inspiration lectures.  Maths clubs and revision sessions are run for KS3 and 4 both at lunch time and after school and these are very well attended. Sixth Form students also run successful peer mentoring programmes in Maths

The Post

This is a key post in a dynamic and strong department. We are looking for someone with a genuine and infectious passion for their subject, who will enthuse and engage the students they teach; someone with high expectations for all students whatever their prior attainment.

The successful applicant will ideally be able to teach KS3, 4 and 5. A level teaching is not essential.

This post is suitable for newly qualified teachers as well as more experienced teachers.

Didcot Girls’ School is a lead teaching school within the Oxfordshire Teaching Schools Alliance with a significant track record for successful fast-track career progression, leadership development and excellent CPD. The school is also part of Ridgeway Education Trust, a growing multi-academy trust, which provides the opportunity for school improvement and leadership work across schools in the future.

Closing date: As soon as possible
