Big Creative Training is a well-established and expanding creative industry training provider with a long track record of delivering positive outcomes for learners. Our mission is to improve the lives of young people through high quality training and creative industry experiences. We have more than 400 young people per year going through our vocational training programmes including apprenticeships, and they all take qualifications in maths and English. We have great industry links and work with over 100 creative sector employers and SMEs.


We are looking for an outstanding part time maths teacher to join our team based in Walthamstow, East London. The successful candidate will have proven experience in teaching GCSE and Functional Skills maths to learners aged 14+, should hold relevant maths qualifications and have English at GCSE grade “C” or above. A degree in mathematics with evidence of outstanding practice in a similar setting is essential.


Key tasks

• The ability to work in a way that promotes the wellbeing of children, young people and adults

• To work collaboratively with the Maths Curriculum Manager to create fun, engaging and purposeful lessons and resources. 

• To create a safe and secure learning environment, including being ready for the learners at the start of each planned lesson time.

• To demonstrate excellent classroom management skills. 

• To complete duties as required by the English and maths team.

• To ensure that learners complete the required diagnostic assessment and record the outcomes on the maths tracker. 

• To differentiate lessons effectively using the results of the diagnostic assessments.

• To set and record effective SMART targets with the learners every half term 

• To have a proactive way of working, including forward planning, liaising with other members or staff and alerting own line manager to any concerns noted.

• To ensure that confidential documents, including examination material and learner information is kept confidential at all times.

• To complete academic registers at the beginning of each session and liaise with the attendance officer regarding attendance and punctuality.

• To liaise with vocational tutors to maintain an effective line on communication, relating to learners and subject matter.

• To regularly assess learners via in class assessment and marking of completed work. Including Functional skills & GCSE assessment against curriculum and marking scheme in preparation of exams. One piece of marked work per week is required with written feedback.

• To attend the weekly English & maths team meeting and take an active part in discussions.

• To carry out Entry 3 examinations with learners within the given timescale. Mark and moderate the E3 papers with line manager within 2 weeks of completion.

• To prepare learners for examinations in a timely manner and follow the exam procedure for entering learners for examinations.

• To plan booster lessons/additional sessions during exam period for targeted learners

• To attend training for invigilation of exams, and invigilate as required.


• To ensure that subject & curriculum knowledge is current to the examination boards used within the company.

• To work with the teaching, learning and assessment lead to achieve good or above in observations of teaching and learning, and to work on own personal development plan.

• To attend company CPD activities and personal CPD activities as required.

• To have excellent knowledge of the maths curriculum being taught at BCT and keep up to date with any changes. 


Desired qualities

• Experience of the Edexcel 9-1 GCSE curriculum

• Experience of the reformed functional skills Mathematics curriculum

• Experience of working in the creative industries using an entrepreneurial approach (not essential)

• Extremely organised and able to manage own work load effectively and flexibly

• Highly motivated and driven to succeed in a competitive and rewarding environment

• Outstanding teaching and communication skills and experience of good or outstanding Ofsted inspection

• Positive, solution focused and proactive when managing and responding to data 

• Assertive and self-confident in management of the learning environment

• Kind, empathic and supportive but challenging when needed

• Committed and willing to “go the extra mile” to meet targets

• Ambitious – will not settle for less than outstanding standards of work and behaviour

Salary and days of work

• This is a part time position – 16 hours a week TBC

• Salary is £35000 prorata (dependent on the number of hours) if you are fully qualified to PGCE level or equivalent, 

• Start date as 1st September 2021

• We offer 32 days holiday plus bank holidays
