Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Math tutor to work within a prison and provide tutoring services to prisoners. As a Math Tutor, your primary responsibility will be to support and educate imprisoned individuals in various mathematical concepts and skills, helping them to develop a solid foundation in mathematics and achieve their educational goals. This position requires exceptional patience, strong communication skills, and genuine desire to make a positive impact on the lives of offenders.
As a maths tutor, you are part of a thriving department that is the heart of HMP & YOI Bronzefield. You will work alongside a team of creative and innovative tutors to encourage and empower our residents to take responsibility for their learning. Your friendly and professional demeanour will contribute to your effective delivery of a range of exciting courses to residents whose levels vary from pre-entry up to Level 2 whilst supporting them on their journey to rehabilitation.
Awarded a bronze accreditation by Investors in People and the UK's leading Prison Learning & Skills Department by Ofsted. HMP YOI Bronzefield focuses on providing needs-based services and programmes aimed at rehabilitating and maintaining the well-being of prisoners. HMP YOI Bronzefield is an all-female prison that can hold up to 542 women.

We aim to reduce reoffending and rehabilitate, changing lives for the better. You will deliver up to 4 lessons a day with time for lesson planning during the working week. You will be supported by our learning support team with marking of work so you will not need to take your work home with you.

We deliver the total operation of five prisons within England, Scotland and Wales and own six Community Rehabilitation Companies in partnership with crime reduction charity Nacro.

Post holders will be subjected to an advanced DBS check, a prison security check (level 2) prior to being employed.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide group tutoring sessions to imprisoned individuals with varying levels of mathematical proficiency. Average class size of six learners.
- Assess the math skills and knowledge of each prisoner to determine their specific needs and learning objective.
- Develop customised lesson plans and instructional materials based on individual learning styles, focusing on key mathematical topics.
- Teach and explain mathematical concepts, principles, and problem-solving techniques in a clear and concise manner, adapting instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning abilities.
- Collaborate with the Curriculum Lead and other tutors to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive educational experience for the prisoners.
- Foster a supportive and non-judgmental learning environment that encourages self-confidence, motivation, and a positive attitude towards mathematics and achieving a recognised qualification.
- Adhere to all security protocols and regulations established by the prison, always ensuring a safe and secure tutoring environment.
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience of delivering Functional Skills in the classroom.
- Recognised level 3 qualification or above in an identified subject and professional experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish rapport and effectively interact with individual from diverse backgrounds,
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to motivate and inspire imprisoned individuals to achieve academic success.
- Strong organisational skills to develop lesson plans, track progress and maintain accurate records.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work within the constraints of a prison environment.
- Understanding of the rehabilitation potential of education and a commitment to helping individuals rebuild their lives through learning.
