Job overview

The main function of this post is to be an adult presence in the House and to be responsible for the safeguarding, welfare and security of pupils by assisting the Housemaster/Housemistress (HoM) and their team in the supervision of the health and welfare of the pupils and their ‘House’.

Built in the 1860s, School House is the oldest house at Clifton College. Today, it is a family-run house with an emphasis on learning responsibility and independence under careful supervision. There is a very strong house spirit and sense of loyalty, and we are committed to a well-rounded approach to school life, whether in sport, drama, music, societies or activities.

Each week, after prep in the evening, the House runs sporting activities for the boys, including fives, indoor football, swimming, and water polo. In addition, School House is the only house to run its own internal debating competition for the younger boys, an event which is often the first occasion the boys have to speak in public. In recent years, the House has also been paintballing, go-karting, bowling, leadership training, Canadian canoeing, and camping in Wales.

We are happy to consider a job share for this role.

About Clifton College - Upper School

Clifton College leads the way as one of the best Public Boarding Schools in the country. We offer day places, flexi and full boarding places. Welcoming boys and girls from 2 to 18, Clifton becomes the school every pupil needs it to be, preparing them for life in the real world, not in a ‘bubble’. We are known for academic excellence, myriad opportunities, state of the art facilities, superb pastoral care and expert staff who deliver the very best learning and development. We provide a richly diverse and connected school environment, representative of the real world. Our pupils mature into individuals who are ambitious, open-minded and spirited.

Bristol businessman Dr John Percival, who championed the benefits of science, diversity and the education of women, founded Clifton College in 1862. The College has since fostered the talents of students including General Douglas Haig and Olympic hockey gold medallist Lily Owsley. The NSPCC had its first meeting on the school’s grounds.

Clifton College Upper School is housed in historical buildings, such as the Grade II-listed Percival Library, but it boasts state-of-the-art sporting facilities, including 24 tennis courts and an Olympic-standard hockey pitch.
