Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence (MESME) is currently seeking passionate and dedicated mentors to support and develop the mathematical thinking and curiosity of high prior-attaining Year 7 – 11 students through our exciting online enrichment programme, Maths Circles. Successful applicants will be paid to take part in MESME’s training programme and join a team of MESME mentors with opportunities to apply for roles in September.
About MESME
Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence (MESME) is a charity dedicated to supporting students from all backgrounds to achieve mathematical excellence, so that they go on to have a greater and richer range of future personal, employment and economic choices. In a MESME Maths Circle, a small group of students come together regularly with an experienced, knowledgeable mentor to grapple with intriguing questions, to discover and explore exciting ideas, and to learn to think like advanced mathematicians.

What we are looking for in a MESME tutor/mentor
MESME is committed to attracting, developing and retaining a diverse workforce, with a broad range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and we encourage you to apply even if you don’t believe you meet every one of the criteria below:
- Strong mathematical knowledge, for example, an undergraduate degree in mathematics/mathematical sciences and/or excellent A-Level Maths/Further Maths results.
- Experienced classroom teacher or tutor of secondary mathematics, with particular experience in creating and using innovative and interactive online resources and teaching.
- Experience teaching and engaging high-attainers (e.g. ‘top set’ students).
- Experience using online learning platforms and tools, including the confidence to acquire and develop new IT skills for online teaching.
- Creative problem-solver with a passion for maths and the desire to nurture this in others.
- Committed to empowering students to own their learning processes, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Committed to working with integrity, openness, and honesty; safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children; keeping data safe and up-to-date; equal opportunities; driving social mobility.
Responsibilities
The key responsibilities for this role are:
Maths Circles delivery
- high-quality and engaging online lessons in line with MESME’s mission and aims
- working within the MESME curriculum and philosophy
- supporting students to identify as mathematicians and feel part of a wider community of mathematicians
- advanced preparation of lessons by way of MESME’s training videos and lesson planning
Reporting and Feedback
- regularly reporting on student attendance, student progress, and programme feedback to support MESME’s continued commitment to the improvement of programming
General
- safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
- adhering to data protection, confidentiality, and IT policies
