Job overview

St Joseph’s Catholic High School is a popular school, situated in an area of outstanding beauty on the fringes of the Western Lake District. This area provides a lovely place to live and work and provides unique extra–curricular opportunities for our students. We are seeking to appoint an outstanding teacher of Spanish and French to join our modern foreign languages department.

The position will be suitable for either a newly qualified or a more experienced teacher. The successful candidate will be expected to teach KS3 and KS4 Spanish as well as some KS3 French.  You should be an enthusiastic, passionate teacher of Spanish and French, who is committed to the highest standards for our students.

The post holder will join a successful area of the school curriculum which is led by an experienced and capable Head of Department/Faculty Leader.  We have a very well-resourced department and you will be based in a teaching room equipped with an interactive board.

All of our Year 7 and 8 students study French.  In addition, Spanish is introduced in Year 8 to students in Sets 1 and 2.  Healthy numbers opt for GCSE French and Spanish at the end of Year 8 and we have a 3-year KS4 which allows us the time to thoroughly prepare our students for GCSE. You will be solely responsible for the successful delivery of the Spanish GCSE course. The department currently offers the AQA Spanish GCSE course.

The extra-curricular activities for the language department include students from Year 7 visiting France for a few nights each year.  Key stage 4 students have had an opportunity to go on a joint language/business trip to either Paris or Barcelona.

St Joseph’s is a Good school. We offer a very supportive staff community. We have dedicated CPD and/or department time on a weekly basis. We ensure dedicated planning and preparation time by allocating more than the 10% normally afforded to staff.

Our students are well behaved and well-mannered and the school’s progress is improving at a fast rate.

The person appointed will have:

 • A commitment to the Catholic ethos of the school

• High standards and expectations

• Highly developed inter personal skills

• A commitment to teamwork

• A positive outlook

If you would like more information about this post or wish to visit our school, please telephone Sybil Worsley, Business Manager on 01900 873290. Applications to be returned to Julie Gaffney at the school address. Miss Kennedy, our Headteacher is available to talk to prospective candidates.

Closing date: noon on 21st  March 2018

Interviews: Monday 26th March 2018

The school is committed to safer recruitment procedures and all applicants will be subject to an enhanced DBS.  This is not an equal opportunities school.

About St Joseph's Catholic High School

Why St. Joseph's?

In 1929, St Joseph's Catholic High School was established by parishioners to serve the town of Workington and we are very proud to be continuing to educate students across this area nearly a 100 years later.

We strive to make sure our school is a brilliant place to work for all our staff.  We are a small school and we are proud of our ‘family feel’.  Our mission is to create an environment that brings out the best in our students and staff, year after year. It's really important to us that we look after our staff to enable them to provide the best for our students and they benefit from extensive careers support and CPD opportunities, a comprehensive well-being package and access to an on-site gym. In September 2021, we became one of the founding members of the growing Mater-Christi Multi Academy Trust and this is further developing our range of staff opportunities and benefits.

St. Joseph's works to ensure that all students feel genuinely valued and respected and insists on excellent behaviour and manners at all times.

Staff and students from all faiths and none are welcome in our school.

It is a an area with a lot to offer, especially for families and those who like the outdoors and getting away from city life. .

Cumbria also has a good reputation for food and drink, home to many good restaurants and hotels. There are theatres in Workington and Keswick which have an excellent year round programmes and, in addition to this, Carlisle, Newcastle and Manchester are easily reached by car and train.

Because Cumbria is also renowned for its low crime rate, friendly communities, old fashioned manners and values, it is a fantastic place to teach, raise a family, grow an inspiring career and pursue a wide variety of passions.
