Job overview

Habs Boys School is seeking to recruit strong language graduates, including those looking to change career, to train as modern language teachers under a unique national teacher training programme, the National Modern Languages SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training). This is the only national teacher training course solely for modern languages and represents a partnership between state and independent schools.

Habs Boys is the lead school for the North London Hub of the National Modern Languages SCITT, a school-centred, subject-specialist teacher training programme focused on addressing the critical shortage of modern languages teachers.

Offering a distinct blend of academic and hands-on training complimented by additional specialist training from modern languages experts, this unique teacher training experience with the SCITT approach sets it apart from other routes into teaching.

Why complete your teacher training in modern languages with us?

  • The training programme is a great combination of theory and hands-on classroom experience through school placements.
  • You will have the opportunity to train in both independent and state schools.
  • You will spend most of your time on placement at two schools – one in a maintained school and one in an independent school. Habs Boys works with a range of schools in the area and you will be placed in two of our partner schools.
  • You will be supported at every stage by experienced subject based mentors.
  • You will be part of a cohort of trainees, providing you with friendship and support.
  • Training is focused on languages and is led by specialists in modern languages teaching. These sessions take place in regular hub training sessions delivered at Habs Boys.
  • Subject to eligibility, a tax-free bursary of £25,000 is available from the government, as well as a tuition fee and maintenance loan to help fund your teacher training. You may also be eligible for a scholarship of £27,000 if you have a bachelors degree of 2:2 or above, a PhD or Masters degree.
  • A Subject Knowledge Enhancement course (SKE) might be available for applicants to brush up on a second language/a language studied at degree level over five years ago.
  • After successfully completing the course, you will receive Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) and a PGCE. (The PGCE is awarded by Sheffield Hallam University.)

If you are a graduate with a good honours degree in languages looking for a change in career, are graduating this year, or are a native speaker with a good degree, this could be the first step to kickstart your rewarding teaching career.

We are holding a Taster Day at Habs Boys on Thursday 18th April. Interested parties should contact Marie Carrick carrick_m@habsboys.org.uk/ and Richard Thompson thompson_r @habsboys.org.uk in the first instance.

The application process is then completed via DfE Apply. More information can also be found at www.nationalmodernlanguages.com.

Expressions of interest must be received ideally before the end of June 2024. Start date: August 2024.

Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS record check.

Haberdashers' Boys' School is a large independent school located in the village of Elstree, Hertfordshire. Founded in 1690, the all-through school educates around 1,200 boys aged 5-18, all of whom are day pupils.

The School has a selective admissions policy, with prospective students for the senior school expected to pass entrance exams across a range of subjects. The best-performing boys are interviewed to ascertain their suitability for a place at the School. Entrance to the pre-prep and prep departments is also selective, with assessed playgroup sessions and exams used depending on the boy’s age.
