JOB DESCRIPTION - MUSIC TEACHER

Shawnigan is seeking a highly motivated and talented Music Teacher for September 2023. Preference will be given to qualified teachers who are a) academically multi-disciplinary b) can offer expertise, experience and enthusiasm in co-curricular activities c) are committed to contributing to our boarding campus and community and d) can contribute to the delivery of our strategic plan, Project Future .

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting directly to both the Assistant Head, Academics and the Academic Department Head, teachers are expected to:

·        Carry assigned load of classes while meeting all of Shawnigan’s prep, planning and reporting protocols as expected in the teaching profession;

·        Collaborate with fellow department members and across departments to design and deliver content that challenges our students and prepares them for their post-secondary pathways;

·        Be available to support students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities;

·        Be involved in the full Shawnigan program and the delivery of “The Shawnigan Journey.”;

·        Work with individuals and groups to prepare musical performances on and off campus;

·        Be available evenings and weekends to work with students and provide opportunities for informal individual and group practice or recordings, rehearsals, or special performances;

·        Support students who wish to pursue post-secondary education in Music.

REQUIREMENTS

·        Legally entitled to work in Canada;

·        Hold a post-secondary degree in Music or related subject that aligns with the Shawnigan academic program;

·        Hold a post-secondary degree in Education;

·        Be in possession of, or eligible to apply for and obtain, a British Columbia Teaching Certificate (Independent School or Certificate of Qualification) before June 30, 2023;

·        Preference may be given to those with a current BC Certification of Qualification;

·        Experience teaching Music grades 8-12;

·        Experience in providing multi-grade instrumental instruction with all levels of musical experience in multiple genres;

·        Experience teaching and leading small and large ensemble groups who are working at various levels;

·        Classical, rock, jazz, pop and stage band experience an asset;

·        Ability to be an accompanist for students during performances;

·        An ability to use, teach and troubleshoot Avid, ProTools, S6, Focusrite, LogicPro, Sibelius, Native Instruments, Waves and FL Studio an asset;

·        Ability to teach Music Technology and Composition & Production classes; composition, recording and digital mastering an asset;

·        Ability to instruct students formally and informally on how to use a recording studio and associated technology an asset;

·        A proven track-record of being able to develop good rapport with students and grow a music program;

·        Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability;

·        Experience working with teenagers;

·        Experience working in a boarding campus environment an asset;

·        Experience in organizing off-site performances and entering competitions an asset.
