Job overview

Reports to: Director of Music

Responsibilities: Teaching Music to Years 7 to 13, providing opportunities for music outside of lessons and making a significant contribution to the extra-curricular music programme before/after school and at the weekends. Taking on the role of a form tutor.

The Music Department

The Music Department has three full time teachers and is supported by a team of visiting peripatetic instrumental teachers, in their own dedicated department area in which has been refurbished and redeveloped recently. The KS3 curriculum is internally constructed and prepares students for KS4 and KS5 study where we currently offer CIE IGCSE and Edexcel A Level. The extra curricular offering at BST is vast with the music department being a key contributor to this with performances, concerts and supporting school productions. Results in external examinations are highly impressive and students in recent years have gone on to study at high profile music colleges in the UK and around the world. In addition to this we have excellent performance spaces on the Showa campus including the 500 seater Green Hall and the 2000 seater Hitomi Hall for our whole school concerts.

The role would suit an enthusiastic Music teacher with a passion for the subject, who understands the use of effective research-informed pedagogical strategies, has extensive subject knowledge to facilitate challenge for all students and experience with mixed ability classes. They need to be a role model to the students they teach and be committed to delivering high quality Music lessons to a wide range of abilities. We require a supportive colleague who is collaborative and reflective in their approach and willing to go that extra mile. A strong commitment to extra-curricular music performances and clubs before/after school and at weekends is a significant expectation of this position.
