About Music in Loretto

All Lorettonians are encouraged to develop musical talents, from our weekly whole school singing in Chapel, through to performances of our pipe band. Many Lorettonians play musical instruments with pupils regularly involved in formal and informal events. Performances vary from solos in Chapel through to Scholars’ Concerts, recitals in Edinburgh and the monthly informal ‘Pinkie Sessions’. Each year pupils engage in a hotly-contested inter-colour competition called ‘Songfest’. Each year resident musicians are invited to teach and inspire Lorettonians in a series of seminars and performances.

Music at Loretto involves up to 15 teaching, visiting and peripatetic staff delivering both curricular and super-curricular music, including GCSE, A Level and ABRSM examinations as well as the full variety of experiences, performances and opportunities described in this document.  One of these staff is a music technology specialist who oversees the recording studio.

We are committed to safeguarding, protecting and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and Disclosure Scotland.

The post-holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom he/she is responsible, or with whom he/she comes into contact, will be to adhere to, and ensure compliance with, the School’s Child Protection Policy at all times. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post, the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School he/she must report any concerns to the Director of Pastoral Care.

Loretto’s pupils

Lorettonians come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some are first generation, some are fifth. 20% of pupils are on reduced fees - 105% bursaries in some cases. Some live in the local area but many live in other parts of the UK as well as abroad. Two thirds of the school are boarders. We are co-ed, half girls, and half boys from 12 to 19.

One third of pupils is highly academic and should achieve top grades in their exams. Nearly all students will achieve A-level grades sufficient for entry to universities. Some of the boys and girls may have been offered a place because they have a particular talent in music, art or sport and may decide to pursue these areas after school.

Successful teachers are able to stretch the more able while encouraging the weakest pupils to obtain high grades.

The School operates its own salary scheme, based on the Scottish Scale but with recognition of the extra duties and responsibilities with which staff are involved in a boarding school.
