Job overview

Harris Primary Academy Orpington is a Sponsored Academy replacing Hillside Primary School, a two form entry primary school previously judged to require improvement. Our aim is to give pupils a well-rounded and truly enjoyable education that prepares them for success in secondary school and beyond. The academy joins the Harris Federation, a successful and highly collaborative group of Academies in London.

As part of our recruitment drive to appoint Newly Qualified Teachers for September 2017, Harris Primary Academy Orpington is looking to engage with committed and inspirational trainees seeking their first post as a qualified teacher, as part of an innovative and highly supportive academy team. We want to hear from trainee teachers who are interested to join one of our high preforming and thriving departments, with vacancies available across a variety of subjects and KS1 & 2.

As an NQT, you will follow our highly successful Harris NQT programme, training alongside other NQTs from across the Federation. This enables aspiring teachers to support and learn from each other, in the true collaborative spirit of Harris.

Our NQT induction programme, delivered through our outstanding Harris Federation Teaching School Alliance, aims to welcome new teachers and build their self-confidence in the first few weeks of their career. There is regular contact with other NQTs within and across subject areas, including at our NQT Teaching and Learning conference each September. There is a structure of support and challenge with customised professional learning sessions throughout the year.

Every NQT has a professional mentor who works with you to make sure your training and support needs are met. You will have the opportunity to observe lessons being delivered by experienced teachers. There are also a wide range of additional programmes open to NQTs through the Teaching School Alliance to help you achieve your career ambitions more quickly.

What we are looking for:

  • A qualified teacher to teach across all key stages and who has excellent subject knowledge;
  • A committed practitioner, who will want to attain the highest standards in teaching and learning and who will expect excellence from the students;
  • A collaborative and motivated individual who will lead the subject through a variety of innovative approaches including curriculum design, teaching strategies, use of technology and intervention programmes.

Why work at Harris Primary Academy Orpington?

  • Exceptional professional development opportunities, a warm, friendly staff team and children who are motivated to learn
  • Part of the Harris Federation, which runs four other happy and successful primary academies in Bromley and more than 40 academies in total in and around London
  • Generous Harris rewards and benefits package

About Harris Primary Academy Orpington

Harris Primary Academy Orpington aims to provide pupils with a well-rounded and enjoyable education that ensures each child succeeds academically, physically and emotionally - preparing them for life in an ever-changing world.

Our evolving curriculum has been designed to challenge and inspire children; exposing them to a wide variety of exciting experiences including visits, events, sports, music and drama, but also time to reflect and respond. As a result, our children develop excellent behaviour and social skills while they learn.

The aim of our teachers is always to deliver lessons that children enjoy and feel motivated by. We believe that all lessons should be creative, not just arts subjects. In work and in play, our children are encouraged towards the 4Rs to be reciprocal, reflective, resilient and resourceful.

The specialism at our Academy is Literacy, which we chose because we believe that learning to read, write and communicate effectively is extremely important. All of our students have a reading lesson every single day – this is so that they can read fluently by the time they are age 7.

We want all of our pupils to be confident readers, writers and mathematicians. Our teachers make sure these areas, as well as the rest of the National Curriculum, are taught in ways that engage the natural sense of curiosity that children have. The result of this is that children become eager, confident pupils who understand the joy of learning and are prepared well for academic success.

Our teachers and other staff seek to discover and nurture at least one special talent within each child. There is something for everyone in our extracurricular programme which is packed full of dance, drama and sport. Creativity and fun are important aspects of the way we do things at the Academy – there is always time and space for children to develop their imaginations and thinking skills.

Working for Harris Federation

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit charity. Led and run by teachers, we established our first school over 25 years ago.

There are now more than 40 happy and highly successful primary and secondary academies in our federation. All of these are in and around London. With each school that has joined us, the expectations we set ourselves have increased.

Every Harris academy so far inspected by Ofsted is rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, with three quarters of our inspected secondary academies judged ‘outstanding’. Our primary schools are newer, but almost half are ‘outstanding’, with the rest ‘good’.
