About Kintore Way Nursery School and Children's Centre

Kintore Way was registered as a children’s centre in September 2006. It is situated at the heart of central Bermondsey and is rapidly becoming recognised as the flagship centre for the London Borough of Southwark.

The centre has excellent facilities, both indoors and out, for nursery education, day care and a wide range of family support services.

Kintore Way began life in 1939 as a nursery school offering high-quality early years education to up to 160 children aged between three and five. It has enjoyed a high reputation within the local community and receives a great deal of support from parents and governors. It has always been a very popular school, frequently over-subscribed.

In 2005 Kintore Way Nursery School and Central Bermondsey Sure Start became partners in developing Kintore Way Children’s Centre. The original building has been comprehensively redevloped and a new and exciting extension added to provide purpose-built facilities for children under three, a sensory studio, consultation spaces and a magical garden.

The centre serves a long-established and ethnically diverse population in a mixture of old and new accommodation. Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre are among the local amenities and there are good travel links to central London and beyond.

Additional Information for London Borough of Southwark Employees

The London Borough of Southwark was established as one of 33 London Boroughs in 1964, from the adjoining Metropolitan Boroughs of Bermondsey, Camberwell and Southwark.

Centrally located on the south side of the river Thames, immediately opposite the Cities of London and Westminster, Southwark stretches from the riverside and captures a number of well known areas including the Elephant & Castle, Bermondsey, Peckham, Camberwell, and Dulwich Village.

Described as London's most historic borough, it is in fact full of contrasts. Borough and Bankside in the north of the borough is now a vibrant cultural and commercial quarter at the heart of the capital, with new cultural and retail developments. It is home to many large companies and famous landmarks, including the Globe Theatre, Millennium Bridge, Southwark Cathedral and the Tate Modern.

Having previously been dominated by manufacturing and docks, the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey areas have undergone a transformation during the past ten years and over three thousand new homes of mixed tenure have been built in the area.

Peckham, Newington and Camberwell, in the centre of the borough are characterised by some of the most deprived communities in the country, albeit with pockets of affluence. This area is significantly more multi-cultural (40%) than the rest of the borough, speaking over one hundred languages with wide-ranging needs, expectations and potential. Peckham has been subject to an extensive regeneration project resulting in huge changes to the physical structure of the area.

Dulwich - in the south - is by contrast low density and mainly affluent with a few pockets of deprivation. It retains a characteristically quiet, suburban atmosphere and is home to a large number of professionals who commute to central London.

We have a population of 253,800, and are the largest local authority landlord in London and one of the biggest in the country. The population figure has increased over the last twenty years, reflecting Southwark’s participation in the inner-London renaissance, its relatively high birth rate and inward migration. We therefore have a relatively young population that is rich in ethnic and cultural diversity.
