Job overview

We are currently seeking an excellent Learning Support Assistant to work closely with teachers and other staff involved in the education of a named Year 4 pupil whose needs are around teaching and learning rather than physical.

The successful candidate will engage fully with the Mission of Bishopsgate School which is to prepare its pupils for life beyond school, fostering the qualities of industry, tolerance and honesty among all members of the school community, and helping them build up the mental, emotional, social and strategic resources to enjoy challenge and cope with uncertainty and complexity; to discover the things they would love to be good at while strengthening their will and skill to pursue them.

Children's prep school years are precious and we strive for the highest standards both of teaching and learning and of pastoral care.

This is a temporary part-time role during term-time, commencing 23/04/2019, although a September start would be possible for the right candidate. The hours are 08:15 - 13:15 Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The role will come to an end when the named child leaves the School.

The ideal candidate will have at least a Level 2 in appropriate SEN training, although good GSCEs in literacy and numeracy would be acceptable, along with experience of working with children in a mainstream school.

Key Tasks

The following list of tasks serves to indicate the range of duties and level of responsibilities involved and is not intended to be exhaustive.

Teaching and learning

a) Taking into account the learning support required, to aid the pupil to learn as effectively as possible both in groups and independently by:

i. Clarifying and explaining instructions;

ii. Ensuring that the pupil is able to use equipment and materials provided;

iii. Motivating and encouraging the pupil;

iv. Helping the pupil to concentrate on, and finish, work set;

v. Developing appropriate resources to support the pupil;

vi. Putting SEN support strategies in place.

b) To develop an understanding of learning needs and the importance of raising achievement among pupils

c) To identify, adopt and implement the effective teaching approaches for pupils with SEN

d) To teach study skills which will develop the pupil’s ability to work independently

e) To work with teachers and other teaching assistants to help the child to stay on task 

f) To provide specialist support for particular areas of the curriculum, for example in literacy or numeracy 

g) To assist the Class Teacher with classroom management including planning the learning environment and preparing activities for the pupil with SEN

Recording and assessment

a) To provide regular feedback to Class Teachers and the SENCo regarding the pupil’s educational and emotional progress

b) To keep accurate and detailed records 

c) To maintain confidentiality

Pupils

a) To help manage pupil behaviour, including undertaking break time duties, playground monitoring and intervention to remind children of school rules and behaviour codes; the LSA role does not cover disciplinary matters which are for the teaching staff.

b) To establish supportive relationships with pupils to establish the trust and respect of individuals and groups within the school.

c) To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing the pupils’ self-esteem.

d) To identify opportunities to further the SEN pupils’ progress
