Job overview

The British School of Amsterdam

The British School of Amsterdam is an independent co-educational non-profit day school providing world class learning for children from 3 to 18 years. Currently based on three campuses in the south of the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the school is organised into four departments: Early Years (3-5 years), Infant (5-7 years), Junior (7-11 years) and Senior (11-18 years) each with its own Head and team of staff. We currently have more than 950 pupils across the school. The British School of Amsterdam is directed by a whole school leadership team comprising the Principal, Bursar and the Heads of the Early Years, Infant, Junior and Senior schools. The Support Staff consists of admissions, finance, IT, facilities, marketing and HR.

We are, proudly, a non-selective school with high expectations of all pupils and staff. Our staff are the school's greatest asset; they are professional, caring, committed and work together, whatever their role, to provide the best possible education for the children in our care.

We are accredited by the UK Government as a British School Overseas offering the English National Curriculum leading to IGCSEs and A-Levels. Our most recent inspection report can be found here.

The division of the school onto three separate campuses allows each section the space it needs but means the functioning and feeling of the school is split. We have always wanted to be united in a single building, combining a community of pupils, staff and parents with excellent facilities and abundant outside space. The school has recently bought a historic building within a residential neighbourhood. The school has now started a redevelopment programme, ending in the summer of 2020, to turn this building into a fantastic modern British international school with a capacity of just over 14,000 m². The school will be open for the start of the new academic year in September 2020.

The Management Board consists of the Principal (Chairman) and the Bursar. The Bursar is also the Project Director for the new site.

Now that the building project is fully under way the Bursar is spending most of his time on this. Therefore, for the duration of the building project and possibly beyond, the Management Board are seeking an exceptional and entrepreneurial individual as the Operations Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day management and leadership of activities that would normally be done by the Bursar. They will also lead and build the Support Department in preparation for the transfer to the new site.

The Management Board invites candidates with substantial experience in school business management who can demonstrate the ability to operate strategically, communicate effectively and who will share our passion for education.

About The British School of Amsterdam - Early Years

Since the foundation of the British School of Amsterdam in 1978, the school quickly grew in size from a very small primary school of 40 children to a “leading international independent school” for children of all ages, with more than 550 pupils (ISI School Inspection February 2003).

When the school was founded it was housed in a section of a Dutch primary school in South Amsterdam. The whole school moved to Jan van Eijckstraat (which now houses the Infant school) in 1983 when it had enough pupils to exist as a school in its own right. Since then the school has constantly increased its enrolment. Through the eighties to mid-nineties the school steadily grew. By 1994 pupil numbers had risen to 150. Since then the school’s numbers have grown with more pace. By 1998 the school had 230 pupils. It had doubled its size to 460 pupils by 2003 and in 2016 now has 875 pupils. There are plans to move to a new, single site in 2018-19.

The School follows the UK Curriculum and is the only school in Amsterdam to offer GCSE and A level courses.

The Early Years School

The Early Years School is situated in the Anthonie van Dijckstraat and accommodates children in Nursery and Reception.

The Junior and Senior Schools

The Junior and Senior Schools are situated in the Fred. Roeskestraat, 1.5 kilometres from the Early Year and Infant Schools. A shuttle bus runs from the Early Years School each morning.

The Fred Roeskestraat site is purpose built and accommodates children in Years 3-13; the Junior and Senior Schools are separate, except for sharing Hall and Dining facilities.

The Junior school accommodates children in Years 3-6. The maximum class size is 24. It consists of teaching classrooms, an IT suite, two modern foreign languages classrooms, a music room, a fiction and non-fiction library, access to a hall and gymnasium and an extensive secure playground.
