Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new team working with children, young people and their families, to improve engagement and achievement in the Burnham and Highbridge area.

As a Parent Family Support Advisor (PFSA), you will advise and support parents ensuring their children attend school regularly and gain maximum benefits from education. You will work closely with staff from the Infant/Primary/Junior and Secondary Schools that make up the Burnham & Highbridge Community Learning Partnership. You will also work closely with families and signpost to family services available in the local community.

The aim of the PFSA Team is to ensure all young people have full access to educational opportunities and are able to overcome barriers to learning and participation. Experience of delivering individual and group based support is vital to the role. We are keen on promoting group work within the schools. We have recently rolled out our Anti-bullying Ambassadors Programme to Year 6 students which has been very well received. This group work forms part of our new initiatives to engage with students and their families at an early stage to promote positive attitudes to learning and the school environment.

An ability to empathise with and empower parents/carers and young people is key to this role together with an understanding of the complex and varied issues than prohibit a young person from reaching their potential. Work experience within either education, social services, health or the voluntary sector and experience supporting families would be an advantage.

If you would like to find out more about the role before applying please telephone Mrs Suzanne Lawrence on 01278 784881 – PFSA Manager.

About The King Alfred School, an Academy

The King Alfred School Academy (TKASA) is a mixed, non-denominational community secondary school and sixth form for pupils aged 11-18. It is located in Highbridge. Somerset, and has about 1,350 pupils. The school moved to its present site in 1957, where it was officially opened in 1958. Predecessor institutions were known as The King Alfred County Secondary School, and Burnham County Secondary School, which occupied a number of sites in Burnham-on-Sea.

Over the past six years since academisation the Academy has seen rapid improvement, with student numbers increasing year on year to now being oversubscribed, a high performing Sixth Form Centre which has seen numbers triple since 2017, an ambitious and knowledge rich curriculum and very strong behaviour systems in school that have created exceptional conduct from students, recognised by the Local Authority as being a beacon of success. In 2023 the Academy was acknowledged by the Regional Director for its glowing Ofsted report having moved from Inadequate to Good in such a short period (see report below). The school motto is Belong, Believe, Be Proud and this creates an Academy that is inclusive, diverse and a great place to work. It is a real Community school.
