Job overview

Part-Time Key Stage 2 Teacher, Maternity Leave Cover

The school seeks to appoint a well-qualified, experienced and enthusiastic teacher to work part-time (approximately 0.5) during the maternity leave of a colleague. The role involves being responsible for Year 6 English as well as some additional KS2 teaching duties.

The aims of the Prep School are:

  • to develop in pupils a sense of wonder and a love of learning
  • to provide a stimulating, happy environment in which pupils will thrive
  • to enable pupils to develop their talents and foster qualities of character that will lead to independence and responsibility
  • to encourage pupils to try their best and to build their confidence so that they can each achieve their true potential.

There are usually nine classes in the Prep School, one for each year group from Reception Class to Year 4 and two for Years 5 and 6. From Year 5 pupils are taught in form groups by subject teachers for most subjects with specialists being available from the Senior School in many areas. We follow the National Curriculum, enhancing it where possible and focus on formative assessment through national test papers and AfL.

Each day begins with registration at 8.35 a.m. with either class prayers or Prep School Assembly. Pupils have lessons before and after morning break. Pupils have school lunches which are served in the dining room at 12.20 p.m. Afternoon school for Key Stage 2 pupils ends at 4.00 p.m.

The post-holder’s responsibilities include:

  • delivering the Year 6 English curriculum, liaising closely with the other Year 6 English teacher and Head of Prep
  • monitoring and assessing children’s progress, including regular marking and verbal feedback, target setting and preparation of half termly grades and end of year reports
  • actively encouraging pupils to achieve their potential
  • working as a team with other Key Stage 2 teachers to ensure continuity and progression throughout the Key Stage and beyond
  • attending whole staff, prep staff and parent/teacher meetings where appropriate and/or necessary
  • maintaining a high standard of behaviour both in and out of the classroom
  • following the established reward and sanction systems in the Prep School
  • communicating with parents regarding children’s targets and progress where appropriate
