Aurora is an innovative provider of education and care for children, young people and adults with special educational needs and disabilities. We are currently looking for a part time SENCo to join our dynamic Aurora Hedgeway School.

Aurora Hedgeway School supports children and young people aged 7-19 years old with communication and associated difficulties, typically as a result of autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. These difficulties can impact on their emotional wellbeing and behaviour and create barriers to learning.

The whole school contributes to a positive, vibrant and collaborative learning community where every student is given the care, support and levels of challenge needed to develop not just their academic abilities, but also their self-confidence, life skills and independence.

Significant investment has gone into producing a creative and enabling school environment to meet the needs of our students, including new classrooms and outdoor learning spaces to accommodate increased demand and a wider age range.

The Role:

To Deal with the most Complex students alongside the teaching staff & responsible for embedding SEN interventions across the school.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Establish and promote an inclusive approach to SEN across the whole school
  • Oversee the Annual Review Process with the assistance of an administration assistant
  • Be a key liaison with Local Authority EHCP Coordinators and all professionals in the field on the most Complex students.
  • Contribute to providing high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities and experiences, appropriate to the class group, by supporting the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.
  • Support Teachers & Teaching Assistants and their CPD and have input into the specialist Inset required for teaching staff
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with colleagues and stakeholders to ensure that all relevant information regarding students is effectively communicated to support their development and wellbeing at all times.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and adopt the most effective teaching approaches pupils all pupils ensuring dissemination throughout all staff
  • Monitor teaching and learning activities to meet the needs of SEN pupils and track AFL data for the purposes of Annual Reviews, PEPs, LAC Reviews and general School Reporting
  • Set targets alongside the teaching team for raising achievement among all pupils
  • Set up systems for identifying, reviewing and monitoring need. This includes the management (chairing) of Annual Reviews for Statements and EHCPs alongside the class teachers.
  • Keep parents informed about their child's progress through individual meetings and at parents’ evenings
  • Provide training opportunities for learning support assistants and teachers to learn about SEN, including whole-school Inset
  • Identify resources needed to meet the needs of SEN pupils and make recommendations to the Head for appropriate spends
  • To be involved in the appointment of Teaching Assistants
  • To work with the Head and other key staff on developing the effectiveness of transition arrangements and integration into provision Post16 at Headway
  • To attend appropriate training, CPD and conferences and provide feedback to colleagues

Qualifications:

  • SENCO/Access Arrangement Assessor qualifications preferred, or the desire to acquire these

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant knowledge and experience of pupils with SEN
  • Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures
  • Experience of managing a range of approaches to behaviour, including managing behaviour's that challenge
  • Commitment to the role, the desire to put children first and treat them as individuals
  • Be positive and creative in meeting pupils’ needs
  • Work on your own as well as part of a team
  • Work collaboratively with other staff and professionals with good interpersonal skills
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Competent ICT skills
