Job overview

The Post

This is a temporary part time position (0.3 fte)

We are looking to appoint a well qualified, enthusiastic Art teacher in this academically selective school.

Early applications are most welcome.

The School

King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) is one of the most successful girls’ schools in this country with outstanding academic results and a large programme of extra-curricular activity.  The school is an independent day school with 591 girls aged 11-18 and is part of the King Edward VI Foundation, which has eight schools in Birmingham. It is situated on a beautiful 50 acre campus in Edgbaston, which it shares with King Edward’s School.  It is only three miles from Birmingham city centre and has excellent transport access by road and rail (the University train station is only a 10 minute walk).

The Art Department

The Art Department is a welcoming, popular and focused environment which consists of two experienced teachers including the Head of Department, one visiting ceramics specialist and a full time technician.

Teaching staff specialise in Fine Art, textiles and sculpture, although we share a broad approach to the delivery of the curriculum.

The departmental teaching areas consist of light filled purpose built classrooms with designated textiles, photography and ceramics facilities all situated in a purpose built block adjacent to the main school building. The department also boasts a large exhibition space on the ground floor with a library and a computer room.

Art and Design is taught as a separate subject throughout the school. All students take Art in their first two years after which they have an opportunity to choose it as an option, usually in preparation for GCSE.

Group sizes average 24 at Key Stage 3 and vary thereafter. There are currently 18 girls entered for the 2018 GCSE examination and 7 in 6th form. In 2017 93% of GCSE students achieved A/A* with 57% attaining A*. A level results are similar with a significant proportion taking up Art related courses at University.

The department runs various extra-curricular clubs providing opportunities for students to further explore techniques, processes and materials and to learn more about the codes and conventions associated with art from different times and places. These include ceramics and textile clubs, themed student led clubs, lectures and discussion sessions, and opportunities to catch up and seek advice. Students are also encouraged to enter competitions and regularly exhibit their work in public exhibitions where they can gain experience of curating and learn more about the relationship between art and the viewer.

Application Procedure

If you wish to be considered for this post, please complete an application form giving full details of your qualifications and experience and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two referees and send it, together with a letter to the Principal outlining the reasons for your application (maximum 2 sides of A4 please) by 9am on Friday 4th May.
