Job overview

We seek to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified teacher of A level Economics and Business from January 2023. This part-time post arises due to a member of the department taking up a post at another independent school.

A full-time member of staff at Birkdale teaches 34 periods per week. The successful candidate is likely to teach 20 periods: we are happy to discuss a range of working patterns at interview. Applications are welcome from early career teachers, for whom a statutory induction programme is available, or from more experienced teachers.

From January there will be two full-time members (including the Head of Department) and one part-time member of staff in the Department of Economics and Business, with around 70 students studying A level Economics (AQA), and 50 studying Business (Edexcel). The department is very successful; typically around 80% of Economics students secure A*- B grades with most gaining places at top universities including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and Durham. In Business typically around 65% of students secure A* - B grades.

The department is very active on the extra-curricular front. Birkdale is a Young Enterprise Centre of Excellence and a range of other enterprise activities are organised throughout the Senior School. We have a strong record at local and regional level in the Bank of England’s Target 2.0 competition. In addition, the department produces its own in-house magazine, the Sleeping Dragon.

A varied programme of day and residential visits is offered; this includes an annual day trip to London visiting the Bank of England and Houses of Parliament.
