The Post

A highly effective teacher with a passion for the subject is required to teach Food and Nutrition for Years 5-9 inclusive, working alongside the Teacher in Charge of Food and Nutrition, and as a  member of the Science Department.  The post is part-time (approximately 0.5). 

At Key Stage 3, Food and Nutrition is taught as part of a creative subject carousel, and all pupils have the opportunity to experience the subject each year.  In Years 10 and 11 pupils study GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. 

Rye is partnered with Leiths School of Food and Wine and offers the Leiths Introductory Certificate in Food and Wine for Years 12 and 13.  There is scope for the postholder to be trained and supported by Leiths to deliver a Leiths Let’s Cook! Programme for younger years.  

Responsibilities of the post include:

  • planning and teaching the Food and Nutrition curriculum throughout the school from Year 5 to Year 9 in the first instance
  • leading and facilitating good teaching and learning
  • raising standards of pupil attainment and achievement within the curriculum area, monitoring and supporting pupil progress in your classes
  • fostering in pupils a sense of independence and responsibility in their learning
  • setting high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
  • inspiring pupils and generating an enthusiasm for the subject amongst pupils
  • ensuring the teaching caters for the full range of learning needs of individual pupils
  • keeping effective assessment records and using the school and department recording and reporting system to track student progress
  • ensuring that assessment data informs teaching and that pupils understand how to improve and make progress
  • demonstrating good subject and curriculum knowledge
  • being accountable to the Teacher in Charge of Food and Nutrition and attending meetings with her as appropriate
  • writing reports on pupils' progress and writing other reports as required
  • attending Parents' Meetings
  • attending Science department meetings 
  • contributing to a development plan for inclusion in the Science department development plan 
  • providing opportunities for extra-curricular enrichment activities outside lessons
  • working with the Teacher in Charge of Food and Nutrition to ensure that ingredients are   ordered and ready to be used by pupils each week 
  • supporting the promotion of the subject through effective marketing to current and prospective pupils and parents 
  • organising the subject’s contribution to the whole school community
  • maintaining an up-to-date First Aid qualification
  • undertaking an appropriate teaching timetable of classes

Contribution to the wider life of the School:

  • take on pastoral responsibilities including form tutoring or roles within the House system
  • contribute to the extra-curricular enrichment programme in the School
  • carry out regular duties and supervision, on a rota, during the School day and after lessons as appropriate
  • carry out such duties as are allocated by the Deputy Head or other senior management       colleagues, including cover for absent colleagues and examination invigilation
  • attend School and year group assemblies, events and Inter-House competitions, supervising pupils when needed
  • model high standards of personal presentation, punctuality and commitment, and command similarly high standards of behaviour and attitude from pupils

It should be noted that the above list of duties is not an exhaustive statement of the responsibilities of the post.  It is intended to give an overall view of the position and should be taken as guidance only.  The post holder may be required to undertake any other reasonable task requested by the Headmistress for a teacher which falls within his or her capabilities and which are in accordance with the usual practice of a Catholic independent boarding and day school.

Pay and benefits

Salary will be on the Rye Scale, according to experience.

All teachers are invited to join the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

All salaried staff, full or part-time, are entitled to a fee remission, 50% for full-time staff and pro rata for part-time staff. 

At specified times, staff may use the school’s Fitness Suite, and during Trinity Term staff may use the swimming pool at the advertised times.  Lunch is provided in the school dining room during term time, and refreshments are provided in the Staff Room at morning break and teatime.  There is car parking on site, and the School is easily accessible by bus.
