Job overview

Part-time teachers of Geography (0.5 FTE) and Biology (0.5 FTE) with the potential for a full-time combined role.  Required from September 2017

As an all-girls school nestled in the heart of Exeter, The Maynard has an enviable record of incredible results matched with a truly warm and friendly spirit. We provide a happy, secure and lively environment where every child’s individuality and unique talents can shine through.

We seek an outstanding, well-qualified and enthusiastic candidate to teach Geography and/or Biology up to A-level. The successful candidate(s)  will be expected to teach through the age range and contribute to the exciting and busy extra-curricular life of the school. The post(s) would suit both an NQT or a more experienced teacher.

Why join our Departments?

We have an incredibly warm and dynamic staff with a huge passion for the teaching and our results are consistently outstanding at both GCSE and A-level. We believe in creating educational opportunities outside of the classroom and ensure that each year our students enjoy an engaging mix of extra-curricular actives and trips. This has culminated in a combined Geography and Biology trip to Costa Rica and an expedition to Tanzania just this year alone! We also do a variety of field trips around the UK including Snowdonia and the beautiful South Devon coastline.

Both Geography and Biology at The Maynard are forward thinking, exciting and innovative. Uptake at GCSE and A-level has risen over the years and girls achieve highly and make excellent progress with high value added. The Geography Department has been awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark by the Geographical Association. Many of our A-level students go on to study Geography  and Biology related subjects at top Universities including Oxbridge, so this is an exciting time to join two flourishing departments. The successful candidate(s)  should be comfortable teaching both Human and Physical Geography and all aspects of Biological Sciences. There will also be opportunities to contribute to the broader aspects of the departments beyond the lessons.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a top independent girls' day school with a long tradition of academic excellence and a commitment to developing each learner to their full potential.

The Maynard has its own Salary Scale.

If you have any queries regarding the role, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Lora Jones, Head’s PA by telephone: 01392 273417 or e-mail: HeadsPA@maynard.co.uk.

About The Maynard School

Welcome to The Maynard School!

Set in a leafy area of central Exeter in Devon, we are the leading independent day school for girls aged 4 -18 (Reception – Year 13) in the South West.

Steeped in a rich history dating back to 1658, The Maynard today is so much more than a top academic school. Over the years we have built an outstanding reputation for excellence in the Arts, Music and Sport whilst our pastoral care is widely regarded as second to none.

We are a School where happy girls carve for themselves successful futures, create everlasting friendships and enduring childhood memories.

As the second oldest girls’ school in the country, we pride ourselves on being experts in educating girls. Statistically it is a proven fact that girls in single-sex schools outperform their peers and the Maynard’s long history is testament to this success.

We are an academically selective school and our students achieve outstanding public examination results year-on-year. League tables consistently place us as one of the highest performing schools in the South West.

However, a Maynard education isn’t just about academic achievement. It is about so much more; we boast numerous individual and team champions in the sporting arena with access to some of the best facilities available; we celebrate our femininity and are proud to offer Food & Nutrition and Textiles & Fashion classes as a life-skill; we are one of the highest achieving schools for music and drama in the county; we relish our timetable packed with trips and workshops to be enjoyed by the whole school. But we take our greatest pride from the happy, ambitious and successful students with whom we have the pleasure to work with each day!

At its core, The Maynard is an outstanding school that has deep rooted values and a clear moral purpose. We hope that when your daughter departs for the next stage in her life, she will take with her lasting friendships, have fostered a passion for life as well as learning and own the confidence to take on every new adventure.
