Job overview

We are recruiting for a compassionate and dedicated candidate to join our exceptional pastoral team as a Pastoral Assistant at Stonyhurst

The happiness and wellbeing of our pupils is a priority. We want them to enjoy their time at Stonyhurst in a safe and nurturing environment, and we hope that they will look back fondly upon the many memories they will make here. The structure we have put in place for pastoral care is designed to ensure that each pupil feels emotionally secure and knows who to turn to, should they need that little bit of extra support.

The role of Pastoral Assistant is dynamic and varied and is integral to the daily operations and overall wellbeing of our diverse pupil body. You will contribute towards the school’s commitment to ensure that all children are safe, happy and fulfilled, and enjoy the challenges associated with every aspect of school life as a boarder or day pupil.

A rewarding role, the Pastoral Assistant will be instrumental in nurturing the growth of Stonyhurst pupils in accordance with our ethos of ‘Cura Personalis’ – the development of the whole person, by supporting the progress and achievement of individual pupils. Working alongside dedicated colleagues, your role will involve creating a supportive environment, guiding pupils through challenges whilst celebrating their successes.

The post holder will be a proactive and intuitive member of the staff body, responsible for developing learning resources to help support pupils’ development in relation to a wide range of issues.

Stonyhurst’s Jesuit founders believed it was of paramount importance to allow pupils of the same age to develop strong ties. To support these ties, our founders provided each year group with a room in which they could socialise. Our unique Playroom system provides an outstanding quality of Pastoral care, where the pupils bond as a year group (Playroom) and remain together as they move from Playroom to Playroom every year. As a Pastoral Assistant at Stonyhurst, you will be a presence around the assigned Playroom spaces, overseeing behaviour, attendance and welfare along with assisting in the nurturing and promotion of a compassionate, considerate and cohesive community.

In return, we offer a unique benefits package including but not limited to free swimming pool and gym access, meals on duty free of charge and a wellbeing benefits and discount scheme.

Stonyhurst College is the UK’s leading Catholic co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 3-18. Boarding is from the age of 7.

At the College, there are approximately 498 pupils aged 13-18, two thirds of whom are boarders.  At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, the adjacent dedicated preparatory school, there are around 240 pupils aged 3-13.  Stonyhurst is set in stunning countryside, near the Ribble and Hodder rivers and the beautiful Trough of Bowland. Manchester is only about an hour away by road or rail. The market town of Clitheroe is four miles away,  and we are 12 miles from the city of Preston. The Lake District can be reached in about an hour,  and the Yorkshire Dales are even closer.

Stonyhurst has a fascinating heritage, being the oldest continuously active Jesuit school in the world.

It was founded in St Omer, Northern France (then the Spanish Netherlands), in 1593, and moved to its present site in Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley in 1794. Throughout the years of religious

persecution in England,  Stonyhurst educated the boys of the English Catholic aristocracy and gentry.

The College’s Ignatian mission and identity,  and its sense of family, set Stonyhurst apart from other schools. Pupils are urged to do as much as they can (Quant Je Puis) for other people following the example of Jesus Christ and following in the spirit and charism of the Jesuits. The College prepares young people to change the world for others.

Stonyhurst is a family where heritage and innovation are fused to inspire young people to be agents of change in the world.
