Description St John the Baptist Maitland is seeking a temporary part-time (18 hours per week) Pastoral Care Worker to join the team for 2022. The Pastoral Care Worker is responsible for the pastoral care and spiritual wellbeing of the students and staff. St John the Baptist is a K-6 Primary school located in the centre of Maitland catering to approximately 375 students. We are committed to the pursuit of excellence in all areas and the development of an Australian spirituality, which reflects our Catholic story and multicultural heritage. We endeavour to provide for our students an education which develops their talents and capacities to their full potential. Students are encouraged to achieve high standards of learning and to develop self-confidence and high self-esteem.
Position Requirements A Pastoral Care Worker is an individual who:

i) Is recognised by the school community and appropriate governing body for the school as having skills and experience to deliver school chaplaincy to the school community

ii) Is recognised through formal ordination, commissioning, recognised religious qualifications or endorsement by a recognised or accepted religious institution (Diocese of Maitland Newcastle); and

iii) Meets the NSCP’s minimum qualification requirements

a) A certificate 1V in Youth Work; or

b) A certificate 1V in Pastoral care; or

c) A Certificate 1V in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care; or

d) An equivalent qualification (eg teacher or psychologist); and this Certificate or equivalent qualification must include competencies in ‘mental health’ and ‘making appropriate referrals.’

iv) Chaplains must also undertake professional learning in responding to and preventing bullying and cyberbullying training with the Office of the eSafety Commissioner.

v) Pastoral care is the practice of looking after the pastoral needs of students, not just their academic needs, through the provision of general spiritual and personal advice.

• be competent and capable in monitoring and reporting requirements

Comply with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012 (NSW) and all related laws concerning child protection
Have a relevant and valid NSW Working with Children Check
Be prepared to participate in any reporting or NSCP evaluation requirements as requested by the school/sector.

About St John the Baptist Primary School

St John the Baptist Primary School is a Catholic school in Maitland, New South Wales, that has 260 students in nine classes, from Kindergarten to Year 6. With the aim of increasing student’s outcomes in all Key Learning Areas, teachers and staff undergo regular professional development.

The school originally opened in 1856 and was staffed by the Dominican Sisters until 1996. Now St John the Baptist Primary’s lay teachers make-up the staff and organise extracurricular activities and events. The school also offers support for The Sacramental Program, working with families and its local Parish.

Facilities

St John the Baptist Primary’s facilities include a smartboard in every classroom, a library and a computer lab with 22 computers and a laptop. The school also uses a nearby Chapel, on All Saint College’s St Mary’s Campus, for assemblies.

Curriculum

As a Catholic school St John the Baptist Primary has a mandatory Diocesan Religion Syllabus as well as support units.

The work towards achievement in all Key Learning Areas but have a focus on mathematics, spelling and writing. The school is currently developing the use of Information Technology to support learning in its Key Learning Areas.

School ethos

The school motto is ‘truth and forgiveness’ and is rooted in the story of St John and the school’s Dominican heritage. St John the Baptist Primary also fosters open communication between school staff and teachers using an online ‘journal’ where family can access information about the day-to-day running of the school.
