Job overview

Pastoral Mentor - Social Sciences

Ref: 1718/08

Looking to build a great future? Look to Blackpool Sixth.

You’ll be working with a highly ambitious group of 16 to 19 year old students studying on a range of courses (mainly A Levels and BTECs). Last year, our A level pass rate rose to 99.6%, with nearly 60% of entries gaining a top grade and over 85% of BTEC Level 3 entries were graded at Distinction Star. Recently the numbers securing places at top universities has increased, and two students have secured a place at Yale and Harvard.

Our main goal is to support every individual to fulfill their full potential.  Therefore, at the beginning of the academic year 2015-2016 we introduced a new pastoral system. This introduced new roles of Pastoral Lead and Pastoral Mentor which are wholly dedicated to the pastoral support and guidance of students.

The Pastoral Mentors report to the Pastoral Leads who in turn report to the Head of Student Support.  The successful applicant will play a key, central role in supporting students and facilitating communications across the Life Links Programme. They will deliver the programme to groups of students and conduct regular 1:1 meetings with students which will monitor academic progress as well as providing pastoral support.

Each Pastoral Mentor is expected to deliver timetabled sessions with each of their groups to deliver key communications and the Life Links Programme with the remainder of the time being devoted to pastoral care and 1:1 appointments. The successful applicants will need to be flexible in their approach to the distribution of their duties in order to meet the needs of students.

This is an ideal post for a person who is passionate about the pastoral care of students, enjoying their company and being able to quickly establish strong rapport, removing barriers to learning and working with individuals to maximise their progress. At the same time, post-holders must be rigorous about maintaining high expectations and high standards and discipline in line with college systems.

There’s also an excellent working environment, including a new £25 million campus with purpose built classrooms and state-of-the-art facilities. You’ll also be part of a forward-thinking team that is developing the use of advanced technology.

We are a high-achieving sixth form, giving our students an excellent springboard to success. We educate the whole student, providing all with excellent teaching and opportunities for growth and personal development. We are recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding sixth form. We are relatively small in size, with just over 2000 students and approximately 200 staff. This means that we are a close and caring community.

We serve the whole Fylde Coast area, which includes Poulton-le-Fylde and Lytham St Annes, as well as Blackpool and the surrounding towns and villages. Blackpool Sixth is a friendly, positive and supportive place to work and is rated Grade One: Outstanding by Ofsted (2009). In 2009, we became one of the first organisations in the country to be awarded the Investors in People Gold Award. Staff are committed to the needs and aspirations of our students and supported by an extensive programme of staff development.

Staff are highly committed to the needs and aspirations of our students. The continued growth in student numbers and planned curriculum developments has enabled the sixth form to invest in new staff and new buildings. The college is designated as a Teaching School in partnership with Hodgson Academy and it's a really exciting time to be part of Blackpool Sixth.

All new staff are offered a thorough induction program; this is supplemented for Newly Qualified Teachers with a comprehensive series of training sessions throughout the academic year. All new staff are allocated a mentor in their probationary year, they are here to offer support and guidance in your new role. It's not just teachers that we develop, both teaching and support staff are involved in an annual programme of staff development, supported by individual performance management reviews and training and development plans.

On top of the internal opportunities staff now also benefit from a wider programme of Continuing Professional Development events which come from being part of the Teaching School Alliance, these include nationally accredited programmes.
