Job overview

We are looking to engage the services of Pathway Tutors to support our initial teacher training programme in the South East of England in particular Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, and Hampshire. We will engage with Pathway Tutors within the geographical area advertised.

Pathway Tutors contribute to the success of our programmes through the professional support they provide learners, their mentors and school leaders. 

Pathway Tutors will be required to visit placement schools, observe teaching, and meet with the trainee teacher and school-appointed mentor as part of the services they provide. They will write reports following school visits that include lesson observations, identifying teaching strengths and areas for development. Pathway Tutors will also assess engagement with, and the outcome of learning activities, and quality assure the school placement, including mentoring in collaboration with the team at Tes Institute. 

Skills and experience

Tes will only engage the services of individuals who can demonstrate:

  • Experience working in a middle (key stage, year group, subject) or senior leadership position within a school setting;
  • Experience working with trainee teachers and/or ECTs, including providing advice and support to enable them to meet the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the academic year;
  • Experience in observing teaching and learning and providing expert verbal and written feedback to develop practice;
  • Experience working professionally with school staff at all levels from headteacher to trainee teacher to quality assure the course implementation and support school colleagues;
  • A Bachelors Degree;
  • UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Evidence of further learning and development post QTS (desirable)


Full training on the Pathway Tutor role will be provided, including completing a shadow visit and draft report. 

Pathway Tutors will be allocated trainee teachers when available in their geographical area. Once engaged, there may be opportunities to provide services face-to-face and remotely on other Tes Institute programmes too.

N.B. Enrolment as a Tes Institute consultant Pathway Tutor/Assessor does not guarantee learner allocations. This is dependent on fluctuating programme applications/cohort start dates/geographical location, and the ages/phases and subjects learners apply for. Whilst we try to provide allocations for all enrolled consultants over each academic year, this cannot be guaranteed, but we will always keep consultants informed of allocation outcomes.

*Please note – Pathway Tutors are not employees of Tes; they are engaged by Tes on a self-employed basis. Pathway Tutors are paid at pre-agreed rates as suppliers and are responsible for their own insurance. They must provide invoices to Tes for their services and are responsible for their own tax affairs thereon. Rates for visits as part of the service are competitive. Mileage will also be paid in certain circumstances on submission of an invoice. Please note that Pathway Tutors are responsible for ensuring they have adequate insurance to use their private car for these purposes.
