Full time – Maternity Cover, fixed term for 1 year

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding, passionate and inspiring teacher of PE and Science to join our team and teach both subjects at all levels. This is a 1 year fixed term post for maternity cover. 

This post could suit an ECT as well as a more experienced candidate. You will be working in very cohesive and supportive departments, committed to providing an outstanding education for all of our pupils.

The Arnewood Science department is a vibrant and dedicated team who work closely together to deliver an exciting and challenging curriculum to develop and inspire ambitious Scientific learners. The Science department is comprised of 11 passionate scientists, supported by 3 specialist technicians and housed in well-appointed labs.

We are a strong team that is motivated to achieve positive pupil experiences and outcomes and has a strong history of providing STEM opportunities for students. At GCSE, we teach both AQA Combined Trilogy and AQA Separate Science courses. The successful candidate will have an affinity with young people and will have a desire to develop the science opportunities available for students.

The school possesses excellent facilities for the teaching of Physical Education. In addition to the gymnasium, Astroturf and the extensive playing field on and off site the school enjoys the use of the adjacent recreation centre. This is built on the school grounds and includes a sports hall, fitness suite and a swimming pool.

The Physical Education Department teaches both mixed and single sex classes. In Key Stage 3 and 4 students experience a broad and balanced programme in line with the National Curriculum requirements. At Key Stage 4 students also have the option of following the GCSE Physical Education Programme. Advanced level PE and BTEC Sport have been running successfully for many years within the school.

The department has an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities with many of the traditional games running all year. Regular fixtures and competitions involve numerous school teams from Year 7 to Year 13.

This post offers an excellent opportunity for you to gain experience in teaching across all age levels and abilities as part of the core curriculum, including teaching students in the sixth form.

The successful candidate will be expected to have the potential to teach science and PE at KS3 to KS5.

The successful candidate will demonstrate: -

  • a passion for science and physical education with an excellent subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding.
  • the ability to teach science and PE within high-performing and well-established departments.
  • they are an excellent classroom practitioner, who is experienced in teaching science and PE at key Stages 3, 4 and, preferably key stage 5.
  • success in achieving consistently good results in science and PE, at least, at key stage 3 and key stage 4, or as an ECT to establish this pedigree.
  • they can deliver exceptional extra-curricular opportunities within and beyond PE.
  • the ability to create and facilitate highly challenging and engaging lessons.
  • the highest aspirations and expectations for all students whatever their ability and starting point.
  • an aspiration to progress their career in the future.
  • they are optimistic, positive, and cheerful.
