Job overview

The School seeks to appoint an enthusiastic and skilled PE teacher, for a full time position to start in either April or September 2023.  Experience of teaching a wide range of sports to a high standard is essential, including any of football, rugby, netball, hockey, cricket, gymnastics and swimming. To motivate and inspire children of all abilities to enjoy sport and experience being part of a team that is valued. Additional teaching and cover duties may be required.  This position would suit either primary or secondary trained PE specialists.

The successful candidate will be an able teacher of PE. The Teacher will love working with young children and have a strong desire to make a difference to the children’s learning of sport. The ability to lead games lessons and fixtures with other staff is essential. Excellent communication skills, liaising positively and effectively with parents are very important.

The ability to create a happy, inspirational, learning environment where all pupils can enjoy sport is essential. It is important that the School’s policy of integration of children with special needs, and the School’s commitment to an atmosphere of happiness and warmth in which all children are motivated to work and play to the best of their ability, is shared by the Teacher.

The PE Teacher will be responsible, alongside other members of the PE Department, for teaching lessons to Reception, KS1 and KS2. Strength and experience in teaching a variety of sports is essential, with experience in football, rugby, netball, hockey, cricket, gymnastics and swimming desirable. The ability to drive a minibus, or the willingness to be trained and become qualified to drive the minibus to sports events and fixtures, will be considered most favourably. PE Teachers at Finton House need to be great organisers and leaders. Setting up and running fixtures is a central part of the role (these can occasionally occur outside core school hours) and attention to detail is essential.

Attendance at meetings, both with staff and parents, and generally being willing, flexible and ready to help, is vital. Teachers attend Parents’ Evenings and special school functions; for example, the Open Mornings and Evenings and the Summer Fete. It is expected that the PE Teacher will be able to offer extra-curricular clubs and training in major team sports and possibly swimming both before and after school, for which additional remuneration will be provided.
