Job overview

Sir William Perkins’s School is a high-performing independent girl’s school for approximately 600 students aged 11 – 18 years. The Head is both a member of HMC and GSA. It was founded in 1725 and is now on an attractive 12 acre site situated on the outskirts of Chertsey, a two minute walk from the railway station and very near to the junction of the M3 and M25.

We are looking for an inspirational and enthusiastic peripatetic singing teacher to join our thriving Music Department from ideally April 2018 but start date is negotiable.  Music plays a very significant role in the life of the school and the department has an excellent reputation in the local area.

The role will involve teaching individual singing lessons to approximately 40 students, so flexibility is required as some lessons will need to be fixed and starting from 7.30am on some days.  One of the successful candidate will be Choral Director for the Chamber Choir which contributes significantly to the whole school life.  The Chamber Choir participate in many key music events throughout the academic year including but not limited to Senior Awards, the two Carol Services, singing at Floral House and the Spring Concert.  The weekly rehearsal for the Chamber Choir takes place on Monday afternoons (3.40pm to 4.40pm).    We would consider more than one candidate for the individual teaching.  However only one candidate would run the Chamber Choir.

The Music department has two full-time teachers assisted by a Performing Arts Co-ordinator, plus a team of highly committed peripatetic staff, most of whom are very involved in the wider musical life of the School.  The department is housed in a purpose-built Performing Arts Centre consisting of a 120-seat Recital Hall, a well-equipped music classroom with computers running Sibelius and Cubase software and a good number of practice rooms.  All students in Years 7 - 9 take time-tabled music, and it is offered as an option to GCSE and A-level with excellent results.  The school attracts a large number of talented students and music scholarships are offered for entry into Year 7 and the Sixth Form.

Nearly 200 students receive over 250 instrumental lessons in school.  The department prides itself on its well-qualified and experienced instrumental staff, many of whom run school music ensembles and chamber groups.  The school hosts its own AB music examinations and the management of the exam entries and timetable, as well as more general liaison with the instrumental staff is accomplished with the help of a Peripatetic Teacher representative.  There is a full programme of co-curricular groups and activities, including three orchestras and four choirs.  Orchestras have recently performed The Barber of Seville Overture, Finlandia by Sibelius and have accompanied the Chamber Choir for their performance of Mozart’s Requiem.  The music department works closely with the drama department on a regular basis to present both junior and senior musical productions.  There are regular school and chamber concerts and a series of lunchtime recitals.

Sir William Perkins’s School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  The successful applicant will be expected to complete an enhanced DBS disclosure.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL:

Entrance to the School is by competitive examination and the School values its excellent academic reputation. The students are highly motivated and eager to learn. Significant emphasis is also placed on the broad and balanced curriculum, the wide-ranging co-curricular activities and the caring and supportive environment.

The ISI regulatory compliance inspection in September 2016 recorded that all eight parts of the standard were met and our report in the Good Schools Guide 2016 describes our “Excellent Results achieved with a big dollop of humour, humanity and freedom of thought”.

Visits to the school are warmly welcomed and encouraged.
