Job overview

This is a high-profile role within our modern and successful Pre-Prep at St Michael’s Prep school. It is a full-time physical education teaching role. You will not be classroom based. We require an inspirational teacher to continue to develop the skills of our very youngest children aged 2, right through to age 7, preparing them over the next 5 years for the Sports they will participate in at Prep School.

Good sportsmanship is important to us, as is a culture of everyone taking part and having a can-do attitude. Weekly swimming begins in Year 1 and carries on throughout Year 2. Our dedicated swimming teacher leads this. You will be instrumental in organising the annual swimming gala. In KS1 the children have a Games afternoon where football, hockey, bench ball and athletics are taught.

Sports Day is an occasion for all our children to show off their athletic skills to their families. The organisation of this is the responsibility of our Sports (Physical Education) Teacher. You will be working closely with our class teachers and teaching assistants to ensure the success of this role. We have an outward-bound overnight trip for our Year 2 children in the Summer term. This has become a rite of passage for Pre-Prep children before heading to Prep School. Working as a team with the Year 2 staff you will lead this trip and liaise with the adventure centre ensuring a successful 2-day trip for all.

Written reports are required on each child from Reception to Year 2 in the Trinity term. Experience of Special Educational Needs P.E. programmes and the ability to run sensory circuits would be an advantage. You will work closely with our Pre-Prep Learning Support Co-Ordinator on this.

St Michael’s has a large and experienced Sports Department based at Prep school who can give support and advice, also there are GAP Students on hand to help. You would need a clean driving licence as there may be occasions when you would be required to drive a minibus.

Benefits of working at St Michael’s Prep:

As we are an independent school our terms are just 33 weeks long (5 weeks shorter than state schools). Our Teaching staff work 34 weeks per year which includes INSET days, when training for interesting and relevant topics is provided. All staff working over the lunch period are entitled to a complimentary hot or cold lunch during term time. There is complimentary use of the swimming pool (at agreed times only). Annual salary review, classes are small, parking on site is free, and we would welcome you to the St Michael’s family with a comprehensive, interesting induction program.

St Michael’s actively manages the inclusion of its people and values human diversity, believing that our different ways of being and thinking adds value to our school community. We are committed to creating and sustaining a more ethnically diverse workforce. Values and vision

Joy is at the heart of life at St Michael’s: the joy of our children, the joy of our community and the Joy and Wonder of Learning. St Michael’s is driven by a passionate belief in the value and power of learning: for children, for teachers, for parents and everyone who comes into contact with us.

St Michael’s is an inclusive school where each individual is known, valued and celebrated. We want our children to embrace each day and be inspired by their lessons and co-curricular activities.

We believe in providing a rounded education where children can pursue their passions, challenge themselves and enjoy a creative and innovative curriculum. We are continually looking for ways to improve our curriculum and facilities, making them more vibrant, inspiring and in step with our ever-changing world. Access to our 100 acre site plays an important role in the pupils’ learning and growth, developing them into mindful and knowledgeable citizens who will care for their environments throughout their lives.

Our growth mindset approach to teaching and learning ensures that every child understands the value of failure in their path to success. St Michael’s children are not afraid to get things wrong, or judgemental of others’ mistakes, and this is something they carry with them.

Our school motto: perseverantia, sapientia, gratia (perseverance, wisdom and gratitude) encapsulates our ethos of striving for success and using our skills to make a difference. These values are instilled daily throughout the St Michael’s journey.

We strongly believe that in order to teach our children about the importance of life-long learning, we must first model this ourselves. Our staff undergo regular professional development and parents are also invited to a range of workshops on relevant topics.

We are confident that when our pupils move on from St Michael’s, they will use the wisdom, skills and values that we taught them to make a positive change in the world.

As the teaching is thoroughly planned based on children’s progress it is matched closely to their needs.”
