To start in August 2023, The British School in Tokyo is looking for an aspiring or experienced P.E. teacher to join our supportive team to promote and embrace the school ethos and approach to learning. This is a one-year maternity cover position.


The right candidate loves working with children, enjoys working collaboratively and understands the hard work needed to be part of a successful and evolving department. They will have the ability to teach P.E and Swimming throughout the school from Nursery to Year 6 and be expected to contribute to our extensive whole school extra-curricular sports programme. The successful applicant will have teaching and coaching experience in a wide range of sports (British and International curriculum sports). This role will focus predominantly in the Primary School with potential opportunities to coach secondary school sport. 

 

It is an exciting time for The British School in Tokyo as the Primary School will

be moving to our brand new Azubadai Campus, Roppongi in August 2023. We will

have our own sports hall, 2 outdoor astro pitches, dance studio and a 25m 6

lane indoor swimming pool.

The PE Department

 

The PE department currently has 4 specialist Primary P.E. teachers, swim coaches and a range of externally hired coaches. As a whole school department, we deliver a progressive and inclusive P.E curriculum to students from Nursery to Year 13. We offer Cambridge IGCSE PE and AQA A-level PE and will be moving to IB for the sixth form from 2025. We are a member of FOBISIA and COBIS which has provided opportunities for overseas sports competitions. 

The role would suit an enthusiastic P.E teacher with a passion for the subject and prior experience of teaching this age range. They need to be a role model to the students they teach and be committed to delivering high-quality P.E and Sport to a wide range of abilities. We are an encouraging, friendly, hard-working and supportive team. We require a supportive colleague who is collaborative and reflective in their approach and willing to go that extra mile. You will have coaching and/ or playing experience in a wide range of team and/or individual sports and recognise the importance participation in sport can bring to students' physical, mental and social well-being. A strong commitment to extra-curricular sports before, after school and at weekends is a significant expectation of this position.

Reports to 

Head of Primary P.E and Director of Sport

Responsibilities

Teaching PE and swimming from Nursery to Year 6 with the possibility of coaching in the Secondary School; running morning and afterschool clubs and helping out at events on the weekends. 

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

 

Teaching and Learning

  • In liaison with, and under guidance from the Director of Sport and Head of Primary PE, plan and teach lessons and units of work at EYFS, KS1 & KS2. 
  • Be an exemplary teacher, clearly demonstrating effective planning, teaching, organisation, and demanding high standards of attainment and behaviour in all lessons and extra-curricular sessions. 
  • Implementation of the BST Learner Profile within the P.E curriculum and extracurricular sport. 
  • Monitor students’ work effectively and according to the school’s requirements.  
  • Provide effective written and/or oral feedback to students.
  • Monitor individual student achievement and respond accordingly.
  • Confident with the use of ICT and apps in P.E to enhance students' learning experience.
  • Contribute to the relevant sections of both the school and the department improvement plan. 
  • Attend and participate in regular departmental meetings. 
  • Attend and contribute to regular CPD sessions including sport specific inset within the department. 

 

Other roles

  • Play an active role in leading sessions in our extensive Extra-Curricular programme offered before and after school.
  • Coach competitive sports teams in a variety of sports throughout the academic year. 
  • Play an integral part in running key events throughout the year such as sports day.
  • A strong commitment to evening and/or weekend fixtures and any sporting events organised by the PE department. This may involve overseas trips and visits as part of FOBISIA and COBIS. 
  • Attend, and take an active part in, residential curriculum trips as part of the BST Outdoors programme.
  • Other reasonable requests made by the Head of the Primary School and Senior Leadership Team.
