Job overview
Teach science and A level physics in Madrid.
You'll teach general science at KS3 and IGCSE levels, and A-Level physics in a school where science matters. Small class sizes, well-equipped labs, and a team that takes the subject seriously. Your students go on to study Medicine, Engineering and Biomedical Sciences at top universities across Europe and the UK.
Holy Mary is an independent British Catholic school in Madrid, founded in 2009. We're not part of a chain — decisions are made here, not in a corporate office. That means less bureaucracy and more room to teach the way you believe works best.
Why Madrid?
Madrid is one of Europe's most exciting cities. 300 days per year of sunshine, world-class culinary offer, excellent public transport, and a cost of living significantly lower than other capital cities such as London or Dublin. A vibrant international community, direct flights to most European capitals, and a quality of life that's hard to match.
Many teachers who come for a year end up staying for decades.
What we offer:
• Salary: 34,000 — 42,000 EUR gross/year (based on qualifications and experience).
• Contract: Permanent from day one (‘contrato indefinido’ under Spanish labour law).
• Professional development: Annual CPD programme, funded training, and opportunities to lead departmental initiatives.
• An extensive relocation and benefits package for international candidates (discussed at interview).
• Visas & paperwork: Full support with work permits and local bureaucracy — we guide the process and reimburse any expenses.
Why Holy Mary?
We're not a corporation. We're not part of a chain of schools across multiple continents. We're a family-oriented school, founded by educators, run with the values of a family.
What does that mean in practice?
• You're a person, not a number. Our headteacher knows every teacher. Decisions happen via discussions, not HR portals.
• Students want to learn, class sizes are small, parents are supportive, and behaviour (most days!) is excellent.
• Community matters. We celebrate together, support each other, and protect the culture that makes this place special.
• Our Catholic identity is central to who we are. It shapes our community, our values, and the way we treat each other. We welcome staff from all cultures and backgrounds who are drawn to such values.
What we're looking for:
• QTS, PGCE, B.Ed, or equivalent teaching qualification.
• Degree in physics or closely related subject.
• Experience teaching IGCSE science and A-level physics.
• Genuine enthusiasm for the subject and for helping all students to succeed.
• A commitment to safeguarding and the welfare of children.
• British, EU, and international candidates welcome — we support visa applications.
Nice to have: Experience teaching in a British international school; familiarity with Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel exam boards. But if you're a great science teacher, we want to hear from you regardless.
How to apply:
Send your CV and a short cover letter to vacancies@holymary.es explaining why Holy Mary interests you and what you'd bring to our science department.
We review applications as they arrive and interview promptly. Strong candidates may receive an offer before any closing date.
Holy Mary British Catholic School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS and/or relevant police checks.

About Holy Mary Catholic School - Junior/Senior Department
Holy Mary is a family-owned Catholic British school in Barrio de Salamanca, in the heart of Madrid. Founded in 2009 by two sisters who believed that education should feel like family, we educate 640 students from Early Years to A-Levels across three campuses.
We are not part of a corporate group. There are no shareholders, no private equity investors, no board meetings in London. Our founders still walk the corridors every morning. Our Headteacher knows every teacher by name.
We teach the full British curriculum with small class sizes, a genuine sense of community, and Catholic values that shape how we treat people - not just what we teach.
If you are a QTS-qualified teacher considering a move abroad, here is what you should know about Holy Mary:
- You will not be a number on a spreadsheet. There are 640 students. You matter here.
- Small class sizes that let you actually teach
- A Headteacher who teaches and a leadership team you can talk to directly
- Funded CPD: conference attendance, training, professional growth
- Life in Madrid: sunshine, culture, and a cost of living that gives you your life back
Our teachers come from the UK, Ireland, and beyond. Most choose to stay. We understand why.
Campuses: Infant & Lower Primary (C/ Alfonso Rodriguez Santamaria 23-25), Upper Primary (C/ Cinca 20-22-24), Secondary (C/ Arga 17-19). All in Barrio de Salamanca, Madrid 28002.
