Job overview

Job Title: Post Graduate GAP Assistant (Sailing)

Location: Sedbergh School

Contract Type: Full-time, fixed-term for the academic year 2023/24

Salary: £12,000 per annum, plus accommodation and board

Start Date: September 2023

Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, Provost of Eton, is an Independent Co‑educational Boarding School. The Headmaster is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference. Set in the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park, the School also benefits from fast motorway and rail access to the rest of the UK.

The School is a vibrant, demanding and supportive community which encourages pupils and staff to be involved in as broad a range of activities and interests as possible. Art, Drama and Music are especially strong, and the School has a national reputation for Sport. Sedbergh has its own Prep School, located approximately nine miles away at Casterton.

We are now seeking to appoint a Post Graduate GAP Assistant (Sailing) on a fixed-term contract for the academic year 2023/24. This post will be ideally suited to an outstanding graduate, who wishes to pursue a career in teaching and would like to gain a year of experience in a supportive environment, prior to beginning a PGCE or other teacher training.

Sailing at Sedbergh provides a variety of experiences including taster sessions for Year 9 and Year 10 programmes, recreational sailing for all pupils at weekends, when possible, and tuition in sailing skills for those who opt into sailing as a games option. For those who show aptitude and an interest in racing, coaching is available. The Royal Navy CCF also regularly sails on Thursdays in CCF time. We sail and own a variety of dinghies; Picos, Laser 1, Laser 2000, 3000, LARK, ARGO and RS400.

We regularly compete in endurance races such as the National Junior 12 hour race and the Southport 24 hour race, we sail the 3000 dinghy in class events and in handicap events such as the Great North Asymmetric Challenge and compete in club racing at Killington Sailing Association. We have a regular programme of racing including the Lakeland and Borders Grand Prix Laser Series and on occasion, we take part in the RYA junior travellers’ series.

We will consider applicants with a good honours degree in any specialism, but are particularly looking for an individual who can contribute to the high quality sailing programme, therefore a qualification, experience or interest in this discipline would be advantageous.

In addition to the work fulfilling the general roles and responsibilities of a teaching assistant at Sedbergh School, the appointed candidate will be expected to:

  • Play a full and active role in the busy boarding community;
  • Support the department in administrative tasks;
  • To be a resident tutor in a boarding house of approximately 60 13-18 year olds, including tutoring, supervising and leading activities;
  • A proactive approach to engaging with young people is essential.

The role offers great opportunities for personal and professional development in a School that aspires to be the market leader in all areas of Boarding School life. A proactive attitude to INSET training is encouraged and supported by the School.

About Sedbergh School

The magnificent location of Sedbergh means pupils can enjoy school life in a safe, healthy and dynamic environment. The opportunities for outdoor activities are almost unlimited - from a walk in the hills to mountain biking, or the calm of fishing to the challenge of caving. While academic study is central for every pupil the experiences of a Sedberghian are not confined to the classroom .

 Sedbergh is a School where pupils are presented  with a huge range of opportunity. It is a School which expects its pupils to seize the opportunity or, better, create the opportunity. It is our firm belief that it is much better to try something and fail rather than avoiding something because of the fear of failing. This culture ultimately breeds a positive attitude and greatly increases the likelihood of success.
