Main Areas of Responsibility

Ground Maintenance

  • Ensure that all hard surface, grassed areas and paths are kept free of litter, leaves, weeds and other debris at all times and that all litter bins are emptied daily
  • Ensure the external PE areas are maintained to a clean and safe condition. Routinely review the condition of playing surfaces, working alongside any contractors to ensure the safe use and environment of PE facilities. Ensure that the jumping pit is cleaned and maintained on a regular basis
  • Report all defects to any part of the grounds or facilities as found to the Estates Manager

Security

  • Carry out security procedures for the academy buildings and grounds including operation of the alarm system
  • Undertake responsibility as required for routine and non-routine opening and closing of the buildings and grounds
  • Be available for telephone call-out evenings and weekends as a Keyholder

Cleaning and Building Maintenance

  • Undertake cleaning duties
  • In conjunction with the Estates Manager, ensure the maintenance and operation of heating, lighting, ventilation, water supplies, drainage and sanitation on site
  • Carry out improvements and maintenance to the building fabric
  • Carry out repairs and improvements to the building as required with due regard to capabilities and health and safety Regulations
  • Report any defects found to the premises or equipment to the Estates Manager

Lettings

  • To be available to undertake lettings of the premises, at evenings or weekends, as and when required
  • Ensure that prior to lettings the premises are clean and in a satisfactory condition and that the required furniture and equipment is in place
  • Be in attendance during the whole period of the letting, carry out frequent security patrols and secure the premises upon vacation by the hirer
  • Reinstate the area hired once the hirer has left the premises

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that in conjunction with the Vice Principal that adequate health and safety measures are taken at all times as required by current guidance and legislation
  • Report any health and safety breaches or defects to the Estates Manager and Vice Principal which may place at risk staff, students or visitors

Fire Precautions and Compliance

  • In conjunction with the Estates Manager and the Vice Principal, check call points, equipment and fire alarm on a regular basis, and maintain suitable records
  • Ensure that all fire exits and accessible escape routes are maintained free of obstruction at all times
  • Have a working knowledge of the use and maintenance of fire equipment and report any defects to the Estates Manager
  • In conjunction with the Estates Manager and the Vice Principal, conduct appropriate routine inspections of building services and maintain suitable records

General

  • Take delivery of mail, stores materials and other goods and transport them as required to locations on the Academy site
  • Carry out the moving and setting up of furniture within the academy as required
  • To be responsible for ensuring that any “accidents”, sickness or spillages are promptly cleaned, disinfected and made safe
  • Deal with appropriate enquiries from staff, students, parents, officers and other employees of the Academy, contractors, members of the public and lettings clients

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • Qualifications to A Level or equivalent
  • Basic knowledge of Health and Safety regulations
  • Sound training in one or more of the following: plumbing, general and ground maintenance, electrical/building maintenance, heating systems
  • Basic knowledge of the operation of heating, ventilating systems and common causes of malfunctions
  • Knowledge of maintenance and security systems and procedures
  • Knowledge of supervisory skills
  • Understanding of appropriate cleaning methods and standards.
  • Experience of working in a school or educational establishment with children and young people
  • Considerable DIY experience
  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent telephone manner
  • DIY skills
  • Ability for some heavy lifting physical fitness appropriate to tasks required
  • Ability to monitor and report on structural faults/repairs
  • Ability to monitor and order stocks of material
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis
  • Ability to deal with emergencies occurring outside normal working hours
  • Ability to work as part of a team
