In September 2019, the King’s School, Canterbury, dating back to 597 and one of the UK’s leading co-educational boarding schools, opened its first overseas branch, a Pre-Prep department for Early Years in Shenzhen, China’s fastest growing city. We now have over 250 pupils on this site and our second campus is under construction for opening in August 2022. The new campus will accommodate over 1200 Primary and Secondary pupils in state-of-the art purpose-built facilities comprising: library, health & well- being centre, robotics lab, space centre, performance halls, theatre, recording studio, sports hall, swimming pool, a martial arts room and outdoor sports and play facilities, all alongside other specialist classrooms and laboratories. It will also have a sizeable five-day-a-week boarding community.
King’s in Shenzhen offers a blended bicultural and bilingual pedagogy; it is already successful and gaining an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching, its focus on the wellbeing of children, and its inclusive approach.
The connection between Shenzhen and Canterbury (and its soon to be built school in Cambodia) is a genuine one with regular visits and exchanges between the schools planned for the post-pandemic world. In addition, we are privileged to be able to share resources and expertise, a common philosophy which focuses upon academic excellence, a wealth of co-curricular opportunity supported by pastoral care of the highest quality.
We are now seeking a range of home-room teachers and subject specialists to join our enthusiastic and dedicated team of teachers for both campuses. We expect our teachers to believe in and put into practice our philosophy of an all-round education, based upon creative, active and interactive learning. They should also be outstanding in the way they support the children through each and every moment of their educational journey.
The Prep / Primary School teachers will be the first to work on our splendid new site equipped with everything you would expect in a modern school (and much more). They will, therefore, be able to help create something very special for the future. The teaching day is a relatively long one but the rewards are great as the work brings opportunities to see and help young people develop all aspects of their character.
Our students are mainly, but not exclusively, Chinese nationals from young and ambitious families, typifying Shenzhen. Our international teachers work alongside those from China to create a cross-cultural learning and life experience in two languages, UK English and Putonghua Chinese. We value teachers who are fully engaged with this approach and are prepared to be part of this very special community. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to join the school at this early stage in its development and help to lay the foundations of what we expect to be a great institution.
Shenzhen offers a high-quality lifestyle and is an increasingly popular place to live. The city has everything from green mountains to beaches, from traditional shopping and sightseeing areas to the most spectacular shopping malls. The transport network is both easy and efficient within the city, but provides direct access to the rest of China and Asia. Our teachers enjoy a competitive, generous salary, and numerous benefits such as accommodation (for the first year with an allowance thereafter), medical insurance, 100% tuition fee remission for up to two children.
Applicants should be fully sympathetic with the King’s ethos – please look carefully at the Applicant Pack and the school’s website. They should be highly professional but flexible in their approach, willing to take on a variety of tasks and fit into the wider community life. It should be pointed out, however, that all foreign nationals must fulfil some key criteria to qualify for a work permit. These are listed on page 9 of our Applicant Pack. Those travelling from outside China will, of course, be subject to any quarantine restrictions at the time and place of entry.
This is a rolling process and we shall consider all applicants as their applications are submitted.
