Job overview

Prep School Form Teacher and English Subject Leader

September 2023

This is a fantastic opportunity to play an instrumental role in the Prep School at Rye and be part of a positive, enthusiastic and supportive team who put the pupils’ needs at the heart of everything they do. Developing a love of learning and a strong pastoral programme form the foundations of our curriculum. The teaching of English has a high profile throughout the Prep School and across the curriculum, where we have a book-based and enquiry-led approach to our cross-curricular topics.

As a Prep School Form Teacher, you will have particular responsibility for the education and wellbeing of a class of Upper Key stage 2 pupils, to take effect from September 2023. Children in the Prep School are taught by their Form Teacher for the majority of subjects and taught by Specialist Teachers for subjects such as Music, Languages, PE and Art. In Year 6, pupils receive additional specialist teaching in Maths, Science and English. As well as Form Teacher responsibilities, the successful candidate will be the subject lead for English across the Prep School. In conjunction with the Head of Prep, the English Subject Leader will set the strategic direction for their subject in the Prep School and ensure excellent standards in teaching, learning and assessment are achieved from Nursery to Year 6. You will work closely with the Deputy Head – Head of Prep, as well as liaising with the Senior School Head of English to ensure a smooth transition and progression in teaching from the Prep School to the Senior School.

Every member of staff at Rye St Antony is committed to ‘The Rye Way’, actively encouraging pupils to Be Ambitious, Be Curious and Be Themselves. Staff ensure that all children are enabled to reach their full potential through passionate, innovative and individualised teaching. We therefore welcome applicants from the independent or state sector, who demonstrate an ability and a genuine desire to see children shine and exceed their own and our expectations of them, both academically and pastorally.

How to apply

Applications (application form with contact details for two referees, full curriculum vitae and an accompanying letter addressed to the Head, Miss Joanne Croft) should be emailed to hrmanager@ryestantony.co.uk

For an application form, please visit the Staff Vacancies page of the school’s website. Applications will be accepted only from candidates who have completed the application form in full.

The closing date for application is 9am Monday 20 February 2023. If a suitable candidate is sourced prior to this date, we reserve the right to close earlier. Interviews will take place on Friday 24 February 2023.

Safeguarding

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and the School expects all staff to share this commitment. All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Amended), and therefore all relevant convictions, cautions and bind-overs, including those regarded as ‘spent’, must be declared.

The amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975 (2013 and 2020) provide that certain spent convictions and cautions are 'protected'. This means that they do not need to be disclosed to employers, and if they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account. Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the Ministry of Justice website.

Candidates must not have been disqualified from working with children, and must not be named on the Children’s Barred List or be subject to any sanctions imposed by a regulatory body. An overseas police check may also be required.
