This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Prep School team at Rye and be part of a positive, enthusiastic and supportive all through-school who put the pupils’ needs at the heart of everything they do. Developing a love of learning and a strong pastoral programme form the foundations of our curriculum.

As a Prep School Form Teacher, you will have particular responsibility for the education and wellbeing of a class of Key Stage 1 or 2 pupils, covering maternity leave from October 2023. The Form Teacher is responsible for the education and wellbeing of a class of pupils. Children in the Prep School are taught by their Form Teacher for the majority of subjects and taught by Specialist Teachers for subjects such as Music, Languages, PE and Art. You will be part of a small and supportive team of teachers within the Prep School and work closely with the Deputy Head – Head of Prep.

Personal Specification

Form Teacher:

• Is a qualified teacher with a good honours degree

• Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children

• Has an excellent teaching record from either the state or independent sector

• Has strong KS1/KS2 subject and pedagogy knowledge, and is confident in teaching all areas of learning

• Is an outstanding teacher of systematic phonics teaching (KS1 only)

• Has high expectations of pupils’ attainment, progress and behaviour

• Has effective classroom management skills

• Has a personal philosophy of teaching which reflects ‘The Rye Way’

• Has the ability to foster a love of learning

• Is keen to develop professionally and actively seeks to improve their own practice

• Has an inclusive approach to their planning and teaching

• Is self-motivated, hard-working, organised and has strong digital skills – for enhancing learning and working efficiently

• Works effectively as part of a team, building positive relationships with colleagues

• Is kind and caring and has a good rapport with children from the age of 3 to 11

• Is approachable and confident in dealing with pupils’ parents and external agencies

• Is committed to the wider life of the school

Key Duties of Form Teacher

All members of staff are expected to:

• Set an excellent example to all pupils and maintain high professional standards at all times

• Maintain and promote the reputation of the school

• Uphold the school’s Christian and Catholic values to nurture individuals in a kind, caring and educationally stimulating environment

• Providing cover for absent colleagues

• Maintain high standards of pupil behaviour and discipline at all times

• Teach and take full responsibility for a class, and provide an academic and pastoral overview of each pupil

• Perform duties at break, lunch and before/after school as directed by the Deputy Heads

• Commit fully to the Activities Programme by running at least two clubs a year and promote these to increase engagement of pupils and ensure they benefit from an exciting and full school life

• Ensure that all safety requirements are met and proper procedures are followed in conjunction with the EVC and the Bursar

• Support and take an active role in the pastoral programme in school to support and develop the wellbeing of each pupil

• Be actively supportive of the procedure for recruitment and retention of pupils, attending Open Events and being involved in activities to market the school

• Attend all staff meetings, INSET days and commit to the Performance and Professional Development programme at Rye by fulfilling all CPD obligations


Pay and benefits

• Salary will be on the Rye Scale, according to experience.

• All teachers are invited to join the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

• All teachers are offered membership of the Westfield Health cash plan following a probationary period.

• All salaried staff, full or part-time, are entitled to a fee remission in accordance with the school’s Staff Fee Remission Policy following a probationary period.

• There is car parking on site, and the School is easily accessible by bus.

• At specified times, staff may use the school’s Fitness Suite, and during Trinity Term staff may use the swimming pool at the advertised times.

• Lunch is provided in the school dining room during term time, and refreshments are provided in the Staff Room in the morning break and teatime during term

• All staff are offered free membership of the school library.

Safeguarding

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and the School expects all staff to share this commitment. All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Amended), and therefore all relevant convictions, cautions and bind-overs, including those regarded as ‘spent’, must be declared. The amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975 (2013 and 2020) provide that certain spent convictions and cautions are 'protected'. This means that they do not need to be disclosed to employers, and if they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account. Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the Ministry of Justice website. Candidates must not have been disqualified from working with children, and must not be named on the Children’s Barred List or be subject to any sanctions imposed by a regulatory body. An overseas police check may also be required.
