Job overview

St. Giles is the only Primary Special School in Derby City. We are a warm and friendly school which meets the needs of pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and those with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Pupils may have other associated needs such as visual impairments or physical disabilities.

We are a 'good' school, on a rapid but exciting journey to becoming 'outstanding'. This year the school received the 'Inclusion Quality Mark Centre of Excellence Award' for our outstanding commitment to inclusion. In addition to this, we have also received the 'I Can Award', which is presented to those schools who provide high quality speech, language and communication provision.

Governors and the Headteacher are looking to appoint an inspirational primary class teacher who has the knowledge, experience and specialist skills to initially teach a mixed EYFS/KS1 group of pupils with complex and challenging autism.

There are currently eight non-verbal pupils in the class, who are working within the very early p-levels. All require a personalised, sensory but creative approach to teaching and learning. Our school motto is 'Inspire and Achieve through Creativity'; therefore despite any potential barriers to learning, candidates must have high expectations of pupils with Special Educational Needs.

The successful candidate will need to be resilient, flexible and well organised. They must be confident in leading and directing the work of a small team of Teaching Assistants. Experience of working with pupils with complex communication, behaviour and learning needs within a specialist setting is essential. A second SEN point may be negotiated should the post holder have a specialist qualification within autism or speech, language and communication.

As part of a dedicated and hardworking St. Giles staff team, we are looking for someone who is willing to contribute to the wider life of the school and is able to make an impact beyond their own classroom.

Due to the specialist education that we offer, interested applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the school prior to submitting an application. Please telephone the school office on 01332 343039 to arrange a visit when pupils are in school.

All completed applications should be returned to our School Business Manager at following email address; lhand@stgiles.derby.sch.uk by Thursday 15th December 2016, 9.00 am.

Closing Date: Thursday 15th December 2016, 9.00 am
Shortlisting: Thursday 15th December 2016
Interview Date: Tuesday 10th January 2017
Start Date: April 2017 (or sooner if possible)

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and safety of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This post is subject to a satisfactory DBS enhanced disclosure.
