Job overview

Role : Primary Class Teacher

The British School, Kathmandu is seeking an inspirational and enthusiastic Primary Teacher to join our community of passionate educators striving for excellence and kindness at the top of the world.

If your educational ethos is built on inclusive communities where everyone is valued and kindness is at the heart of everything we do, TBS is the school for you. We focus on the academic, social, emotional and mental wellbeing of our young learners, so that they feel safe, supported and inspired to learn. Our teachers lead by example, planning and delivering learning experiences that meet the needs of all learners, including those who need additional support or challenge, so that every student reaches their full potential.

Teaching and learning
Our Primary Class Teachers are responsible for the academic and holistic development of the students in their class. They teach English, Maths, Science and PSHE in line with the English National Curriculum, with a strong emphasis on oracy, communication skills and digital literacy throughout. Writing across the curriculum is a current whole school priority, supported by the Read Write Inc Early Literacy programme and termly writing assessments.

Our foundation subjects are taught through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), tailored to our unique setting while still meeting the UK National Curriculum learning objectives. Through the IPC, students explore global citizenship and sustainability and their role in making a positive difference locally and globally. Teachers use assessment for learning to give meaningful feedback so that students understand their progress and next steps.

Specialist teachers deliver weekly lessons in library (a love of reading and literature), PE (including swimming), music, performing arts and modern foreign languages. Forest School is part of our standard curriculum and is delivered weekly on site.

Support and professional growth
You won't be working alone. Class teachers are supported by Class Learning Support staff, our EAL teacher and our Additional Learning Needs department. Our teaching teams work together in Professional Learning Communities on shared targets, and TBS is part of COBIS, FOBISIA and other regional networks, with opportunities for professional development.

Community
Our community partner programme connects our students with partner schools and organisations across Kathmandu, and our student leadership roles give children a real voice in school life.

Beyond the classroom
All teachers contribute to our co-curricular programme, with a minimum commitment of one hour per week throughout the year.

Educational trips and residential visits are a key part of our curriculum. All teaching staff take part in the annual school expeditions or Camp TBS, where each year group goes on a residential trip or school sleepover. These are a chance for students and teachers alike to experience Nepal beyond the Kathmandu Valley, fostering environmental awareness and an appreciation of our extraordinary host country.

About you
A recognised UK or equivalent teaching qualification is essential and a minimum of two years experience in a UK or British international school is desirable. Please refer to the person specification for further details.

About The British School, Kathmandu, Nepal

Aims

The British School Kathmandu is an inclusive, values-led school where staff, students, and parents work together in a safe, caring, and internationally-minded community. We aim to provide an education that enables children and young people to grow academically, emotionally, socially, physically and morally. Through strong partnerships, we seek to develop well-rounded individuals who are thoughtful and recognise the positive difference they can make in their communities, both locally and globally. Our motto 'Excellence and kindness at the top of the world', reflects the balance at the heart of our school: a commitment to exceptional standards alongside genuine care.

Overview

The British School Kathmandu is a not-for-profit and a non-selective British international school, which has a rich history of educational excellence, inclusion and kindness stretching for 60 years in Nepal. We currently educate around 500 students from ages 3-18 from over 30 different countries, from both local and expatriate families, who trust us to care for and educate their children. Our students achieve excellent results, consistently above UK averages, but more importantly, they are kind and a delight to teach.

Set within a leafy campus in Lalitpur, Kathmandu, TBS is a small school with a big heart. We are small enough for every student to be known and valued, while offering the opportunities, ambition and educational standards of a leading international school.

As a 3-18 school, we value collaboration across phases and encourage colleagues to contribute to curriculum development, and at times teaching, across all phases of the school. We seek staff who actively embrace the values of the school and are committed to maintaining both high expectations and strong relationships.

The school is a founding member of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) and a fully accredited member of the Confederation of British International Schools (COBIS). It is a British School Overseas (BSO) school and our most recent BSO inspection is October 2025. The patron is H.E. the British Ambassador to Nepal.

School structure

The school is generally two form entry throughout. The Primary Section and The Secondary Section are each led by their own leadership teams with a whole-school Principal leading both.

The leadership teams oversee the monitoring and tracking of progress of each student and are responsible for the high quality of teaching and learning, along with the outstanding pastoral care. From Year 4 upwards, every child sits a Cognitive Ability Test (CAT4s) which enables the staff to assess the progress of the students, map their strengths and weaknesses and personalise their learning journey, so that it is appropriately challenging.

All appointed staff are enthusiastic, energetic and fully committed to delivering a high quality British education. Educational advisors from the UK and Commonwealth visit the school to share their expertise on best current practices in education.

We are situated in the Jhamsikhel area of Patan, approximately two kilometres to the south of Kathmandu. There is a wealth of activities available from art and sport to good restaurants and a busy social calendar. Whilst Kathmandu is a city, on the edges of the valley and beyond there is a beauty which exceeds all expectations; as Rudyard Kipling said, "The wildest dreams of Kew are reality in Kathmandu”.
